Clinging to my guns and religion in KCMO.
I drilled and tapped a differential lube hole in the C4 batwing that I'm putting on the iron differential in my '69. The pipe plug I'm using is a nice shiny stainless steel piece. I'd like to dull the surface of the plug so it more closely matches the cast aluminum batwing appearance. Any hints on how to take the shine off stainless steel?

Thanks.

Seem to recall the welding "paste" goes flat on the finish if you don't buff it after welding (TIG). Maybe check a welder locally?
POR-15 product Metal Ready is used to prep for paint and welding - maybe it does too.

Cheers - Jim

I think it is an acid paste. It's used on stainless weldments to remove the discoloration. It also etches the metal and leaves a satin finish. I suppose its a more aggressive passivation technique.

Sandblasted stainless looks dull grey, pretty much like blasted steel maybe a little lighter grey ....
