Here is a picture of the starter solenoid inside. The post on the left is the "batt" terminal, and the contact on the right is the "R" terminal. When engaged, the solenoid plunger forces a washer to contact both of these, supplying 12+ directly to the coil, bypassing the ballst resistor.
Although there is some wear on the "Batt" terminal, it is still usable. However, it would appear the "R" terminal is not making contact. This would cause hard starting, and possibly hard hot start.(Firing. Cranking is un affected)

That kind of wear (although hard to gauge how rough that area is) can leave you stranded in no time. I had that happen, burned up the mating contact patch on the big contact washer. I had to take it apart, sand the contact and flip the washer around for a quick fix.

B2B,

Please mention to those in the forum who don't rebuild starters very often that the BAT stud/button can be loosened and rotated 180* to double the useful life of that part.
Keep the pictures coming.

it would be easier to route the 12v from the ignition sw when it is held over rather than that complex mess.

Another reason to go breakerless

The contact for the starter lug can be rotated too...
