I just noticed yesterday what seems to me to be excessive slop/backlash in the transmission. With the rear tires off the ground, if I put the thing in first or second gear (didn't think to try this on the other two gears) it just seems like I can twist the driveshaft back and forth an excessive amount of degrees rotation. There's also an audible clunk coming out of the case when it hits the end of the rotation slop. The transmission only has about 58k miles on it (it sat on the shelf for years while I was running the DN5spd), so I didn't think it would give me indications of needed repair. Questions:
How much rotational slop is "common"?
How do you take the slop out? These antique boxes don't have individually removable gears like my 5 speed, and I'm under the impression that the cluster gears are damn expensive.
Educate me a bit here. Thanks.
