Steering Shaft Slides in and out

What holds the steering shaft in and tight?

Mine was tight but is now a little lose,

Neal

I'm presuming you're talking about the part of the shaft which can collapse in an accident

GM injects plastic to keep the bits which slide from rattling - but even without the plastic, it tends to be a good fit.... any thoughts on how it got loose?

I made mistake once to put the steering column straight up on the splined shaft. The injected plastic tabs broke so now it can slide in and out. No adverse issues though.

Sorry for the late response, been busy with the Holidays

It hasn't been an issue just something I noticed while working in the area.

Its the section that slides out under the hood that attaches to the rag joint.

One thing that concerns me I guess is the extra pressure it puts on the R&P input shaft from the weight of the shaft.

So there would be know way to set the shaft as it was from the factory?

Tim it is a T & T column,

Thanks for the input,

Neal

Sounds like the plastic injection has sheared. Not a real problem IMHO. The shaft itself really doesn't weigh much so I don't think it will have any effect on your rack input. The problem would be if it came apart far enough to disconnect. I'd bet there is a 10 or 12 inch overlap between the inner and outer shafts.
