Hi All,
I'm trying to get my diff squared away,so I can shut this "winter" project down, and get to cruising.Still waiting on the stub axles ,ect..

Was messing around today cleaning parts and noticed that I have cracks running out of the teeth valleys,on the big side of my pinion gear.
That can't be good...or is this normal? Every one save 3 have a circular crack running out of them.

Anyway I was thinking about changing from the 3.07's that I have,to
3.54's. In some product descriptions I read this:

Note:
When replacing a 3.73 and numerically lower ratio gear set with a 3.55 or higher gear, the case must be changed to a 3.92 and higher case.

Does this mean my 1980 3.08 case won't accept a 3.54 ring?
I also found the very same gear set else where saying it was a direct fit.
Kinda confusing.

There are different cases depending on which ring gear- because of the diameter of the pinion gear. You can get a "thick" gear and install a 4.11 on a case for a 3.08. (or the other way around- bad memory)

As far as the cracks on the pinion go, are they real cracks or just appear to be? Get a dye penetrant kit and confirm them. Or find a machine shop that can check them for you.\

Best answer for which gear will fit what case might be to send Gary, (GTR1999) a pm/email and ask him.
