I found a neat way to get a working low fuel gauge with aftermarket gauges. All you need is a VDO make point switch, it's from their ocean line series and is part number X10-719-002-037. You can also use it for any other warning light means, switching a light on at a climbing or falling signal.
The unit has a small pot meter that can be adjusted so you can set when the light comes on. It's about 50$.

The unit simply plugs in between the gauge and wiring harness (or whatever you fabbed up to hook up an aftermarket gauge). Do note that the unit is made to be plug & play for vdo gauges, for other gauges the connector will most likely not fit (won't for autometer gages with spades) but it's easy enough to remove the terminal ends from the connector and hook them up just like that. The vdo signal and 12v ign wire locations on the connector are reversed from the autometer ones so do take note of that. The black connector has 3 wires, red, yellow and black, obviously 12V ign, signal and ground. There are small symbols on the black connector to denote which is which ( simple +, a ground symbol and G for sender, Geber in German)

The neat thing about this unit is the dip switched settings.

The first 2 allow you to set the light trigger to trigger for a climbing or falling signal. For a low fuel light w/ stock 0-90 ohm sender values it's obviously falling.

The 2nd set allow you to set the trigger point. When you set it to this, you can turn the pot meter and the gauge needle will move, and you can set it where you want to light to switch on. Next flip the 2 dips and the gauge will show the actual reading and the light will work when the signal setting is met. The other 2 wires coming off the make point switch are obviously for the warning light.

As posted a few minits ago, I think a 3-4 way system is necessary to AUDIBLE alarm when anything is out of wack....lights just don't get it on a sunny day, especially with the top down....

That's one thing I can't stand, all those ding ding, ding dong, gong gong sounds in a car.

C5 & 6 have that for tire pressure (actually any warning) and when stomping on the autobahn the tires obviously get hot and you get a high pressure warning. Driving you completely nuts, so let off a little air...then when driving slower sure enough "ding ding" check gauges... tire pressure LOW.. AARRRRRRRRRGHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!
