Came at intersection where I had to give priority and was waiting to have enough room to pull up onto the road. The driver behind me decided to start for some unknown reason and ran into the rear of the car. :(

Seems like I need a new rear bumper and the car will be once more into the paintbooth for several weeks. Damn, seems like this car is cursed somehow.

I had a cursed Corvette once. I was driving it home from the body shop and someone did the same thing they did to you. I drove the car directly back to the shop. I was maybe 1/2 mile away!

I dunno if I posted here or not, in some thread....but

Wife/I met maybe 14 years ago, married 12 years end of last Feb....

she had bought a '99 Escort.....new.....so we married in 01, about 03 she got hit in rear, car fixed by offender's ins co....

the hit again some years later, we left the trunk alignment problem alone....

then driving the MIATA, with her grand daughter, got hit by some cphone driving bitch that was not paying attention, hit her gas right into the back of Linda's Miata.....

this last one, some jerk driving revoked got a couple of tickets totallying a lousy ~340 bux....

for hitting her Escort in the reat at 45 mph.....shoving her forward into the van ahead, her stopped in a line of traffic....

he was TEXTING!!!!! as the previous one with the Miata....

it has cost us a fortune over the months since losing the Escort....

all that damn work, for nothing....and insurance in Florida is not worth a fuck....it's a upside down NO FAULT state, one of the strongest negatives about this state is the INSURANCE ASSpects of the location...homeowners, and auto both.....

much less the 'legal' system.....:eek::smash::twitch::surrender:

SHiiiiiiiiit.:eek::hissyfit::hunter:

You still run the flex bumpers? I hope so.

At least if not the oops-I-forgot-to-brake kind of rear-ending, where you get it totaled and yourself injured.

I wonder if the beauty and rarity (at least in Europe) of the car doesn't hypnotize other drivers, making them doing stupid things.
That reminds me a thread (on CF I think) on how Vettes are giant magnet for driving asshole.

Don't know what he was doing and yes it was a flexible bumper, but the paint has cracks all over it. As far as I can see the rear fiberglass is ok, but I'm not sure since part is covered by the rear spoiler.

Is it just me or are the other cars on the road always crawling up close ?

Feel like shit now.

Sorry for your misfortune, I feel your pain. I agree some drivers follow way too close and in the 'Vette it seems even worse, maybe because we sit so low...

I had someone following me up close yesterday late so I sped up... it was the rozzers...they pulled me over grrrr no ticket though

This made me think why some guys keep their cars as trailer queens...

Anyway, I have tried everything to get them to stop crawling up so close, trying to outrun them, but there's always a point where you have to brake and when they have been trying to follow you, they have to really get into the brakes, which is when it really gets dangerous. Now, I just slow down so much that they get annoyed enough to pass me. But that was no good in this situation. At first I thought he deliberatly hit me.

I'm sorry about your car - that sucks - but it sounds like it can be fixed.

The joys of owning a collector car:
1) people take pictures of your car (most times while driving (and swerving) next to you)
2) people admire your car (most times while driving (and swerving) next to you)
3) people tell you that they like your car (most times while driving (and swerving) next to you)
4) then there are the assholes drive (and swerve) next to you because they're useless assholes who are breathing my air.

Honestly, I'd rather they just didn't care - after all, I bought my car because I like driving it....

I get SOME attention on the road, not all that much....maybe a wave, sometimes from pickups and kids....

what I enjoy is people in parking lots walk up and ask the inevitable....what YEAR is that,...I just grin and ask 'what years do you like?' it's got parts on it from '65 through '94, so take your pick.....

THAT gets a bewildering laugh....then I say it was born in '72, but found out a whole new meaning to life....

:bump:

Oh boy that sucks .... Only good thing is you might be able to get a brand new fiberglass bumper on the insurance's nickel .... How about that Vanacor bumper with the tall integrated spoiler???

A question to this : I just took a good luck underneath. The shockabsorber on the left has been pushed in about 5 cm (2 inch) and seems to have come back. Is this supposed to do this and ok or does it need to be replace ?

Bumper is cracked in a corner on the bottom and one of the middle light is also cracked.

Sorry to hear about your misfortune... sucks to have this happen after a long restoration.
I have no knowledge about the vette bumper absorbers but on one of my old volvos it is designed as a gas/hydraulic unit that will spring back after an impact. There still is a limit as to how much it can take, around 8km/h? or something.

I have also noticed that people tends to creep up very close to my rear bumper when I drive the Corvette. I do not know why but it does not matter if it is a male or female driver, young or old. I usually just slow down untill they passes me. You never know what crazy people is driving the car...
Hope you can get good support from your insurance company and that you will be back on the road soon again.

Take another good look: if that shock absorber collapsed 2" then it was either weak to begin with or the impact was harder than you think.... I assume you're going by scraped off paint or dirt-marks on that shock absorber????

Hard to believe the bumper moved two inches and there's no damage to the quarter panel, maybe you got lucky (as bad as it sucks, hopefully it's just a new bumper cover, some paint and you're back on the road.

My quarters were fine also, urethane rear bumper smashed and both enersorbers pushed in. The asshole in my case hit me at about 15 moh

Maybe the absorber got hit sometime before I got the car. Don't know. Ok to reuse or not ?

So far, it seems I've got a ripped cover, 1 lense that has a crack and the left absorber that went in (judging by the paint being scratched off). Don't know about the metal shock absorbers on the bumper bar and judging from underneath the fiberglass doesn't look damaged. Will only know for sure after dismantling the cover.

The "patatvorm" will be flat, iundoubtedly. The alu bumper will probably be fine.
