The engine date must precede the car build date, otherwise something is amiss. Some engine machining operations (decking) will obliterate the engine ID.

Engine ID Code Example: V0101CLJ - (V = Plant, 01 = Month, 01 = Day, CLJ = Engine Suffix Code)
Another example: T0830CTY - (T = Tonawanda, 08 = August, 30 = 30th day, CTY = 1970 396 Camaro, 375 hp, 11.0:1, TH400)

You've got me buddy, are you sure those are both I's or might one or both be 1's?
I thought maybe 10=Oct. 31=1st day but I haven't ever seen a one character engine code??

No...not sure. It's out of the car now so I will confirm and get the date code while I'm at it later today

ok Rick, here is what I found. The front pad stamp still clearly shows FI03IS
Behind the distributor on the top side of the block is J281
Under the timing cover on the right is G15 and on the left is 870

Does this help at all?
What I come up with is J=October 28=Day of October and 1=1961?
But the casting #3782870 is for 1962-65 only? Could it have been cast in October 1961 for a 1962 model car?

Definitely - they sold "62"s in 1961. And they build the engines and have them on hand as they assemble the cars. I don't think that is mismatch of dates.
