cant seem to get rid of belt squealing,i have no ac or 3rd belt, ...2 belts ..re aligned alt all square, every thing tight, should i try going back to the 1/4" belts ( small bloock ) ? roughing up pulleys ? pulley kit from ecklers ( alum that increase hp 20%) just for different angles involved ? idler arm? any thoughts ,thanks

Have you got power steering? Is the water pump 3 grooves or 2? Crank? I've got 3 belts- one from the crank to the water pump (back groove), the next one is crank, water pump, power steering. And then a short belt from the power steering to the alternator. I've got the part numbers for the belts too. And you can't pull the power steering belt tight enough to keep it from squealing. I've tried.

pulley position 1 never had belt .had no adjustment, looks like missing idler, position 2 looks right , position 3 looks right .( have no a/c ) position 2 is the one making the noise . thought there might be a missing idler in there some where . is yours still noisy? i can control mine by throttle control but thats no fun . maybe i"ll try those after market pulley set ups .i heard they will cause less fan rpm and overheating ! thoughts ? http://www.ecklerscorvette.com/corv...-pump-pulley-march-performance-1965-1974.html

:shocking:

I forget which car it was, but some 20 years ago, I fought a problem with squeeling fan belts....I finally traced it down, upon talking with some old independent parts house friends,

seems they changed the pitch of the V notch in the changeover from SAE to Metric somewhere in there.....and so the backs and V wedge are different sizes, depending on loading, a metric belt will work on our old pulleys, but not always.....they tend to squeel.....

what I noted was the belt riding lo in the pulley, the outer edges of the V were worn, and the back of the belt was concave the bottom of the V wedge was almost untouched....

and they wore quickly, constant readjustment.....

so buying an older and getting scarce/expensive belt meant for old shit was the cure, and that syndrome was yet another reason I went serp drive on my '72......

I tried cleaner, and belt lube chasing a squeak for weeks. Eventually I bought a new belt and brake cleaned my pulleys. Fixed it.

Sometimes belts are just too coated with crap to be saved.

Big block, no air, with power steering, there is not a factory installed idler pulley. Not having the belt on the rear groove is why it's making noise. Not enough contact area for the length of the belt.
Look at the upper right belt diagram on the page from the AIM.

I don't have a problem with overheating (L-88 radiator) no fan clutch (can't hear the fan over the exhaust), and no belt noise. Less fan RPM means less water pump RPM too.

could you find a part number for the rear groove belt / crank to water pump ? i"ll try that ... ,tight sqeeze or remove pulley for install ? thanks

Only way to install the rear belt is to pull everything. And then it's a fight to get the water pump pulley back on.
I won't be home until after the 1st. I'll get it to you as soon as I get home.

Got Lucky-- found the file:

Dayco 15325 Crank to Water pump
Dayco 15445 Crank to water pump to Power Steering
NAPA 25-08003 Power Steering to Alternator

These match the factory installed belts. Make sure the 15325 belt is tight, but not like a banjo string. Should have 3/8-1/2 of deflection at the center between the pulleys. It's tight enough that it's difficult to get the water pump pulley over the studs. Not impossible, just tough.

With the right length of belt this is possible + my Stewart pump had slotted holes with studs to allow for adjusting the waterpump.

pulled everything apart, took glaze off pulleys, have sticky spray(belt conditioner)taping fingers up like a boxer waiting for the fight (inner belt to arrive )

Save the sticky spray for your surf board. You won't need it for your nice clean pulleys and new belts.

spray grip

my dog loves it !

When I used to have a 84 T/A with a 5.0 h.o. it's belts squeeled a lot. My mechanic at the time sprayed them with wd-40 as odd as that sounds and it when away for a few weeks.

Every belt squeal problem I've ever had was due to either having the wrong belt (wrong profile) or the pulleys were out of alignment. This can be a very frustrating problem to solve. Good luck.

installed all 3 new belts ....squeal gone. thanks tim and everyone ! btw crank to waterpump belt dayco15325 a bit loose.3/4" play . installed very easily.part guy had different number 15320 a little smaller i believe .i"ll play with this set-up for now .very happy with results
