If the car is very original, I’d pull all the air pump parts, clean it all up and store it. Your car is old enough that it is exempt.

I pulled one off one of my cars and ended up giving it away when I moved. But, the car was not at all original.

It makes sense if you disconnect it, the system will foul up.
 
Been a long time but, I think the EGR valve on the intake controls this? There is a vacuum line to the EGR. Maybe remove that and see if that fixes it.
