Clinging to my guns and religion in KCMO.
Just curious if anyone has heard any decent feedback on the round filters that replace the chrome covers on the early C3 air cleaners. Depending on what sort of WOT pressure drop numbers I get on the '69 and '84 I might consider using one of those type on track days. Fortunately it would fit both cars so I could swap it back and forth. Any legitimate airflow issues reported about these things?

Thanks,
Mike

just that they are a fire hazard from back fires, some guys swear by them others think they are fire hazard....i went with a stock type dual feed cold air filter

I've never had a problem with backfires causing any additional problems because of the lid air cleaner on my car. But I'm not everyone, so I can't speak to their experience.

I like mine, the rest of the filter becomes useless because it'll draw from the path of least resistance - even if the hood is really close to the top of the filter. Do I feel any difference at all? no, but I can't imagine that reducing restriction above the carb would be a bad thing.

I know I have read that the lid filters are supposed to create a lot of turbulence and actually hinder performance but I do not have any empirical data to back up that assertion. I think it is worth a try.

I appreciate the input, guys.

I've got some tubes welded into the air cleaner bases to hook up to my Magnehelic differential pressure gauge to see what kind of drop I'm getting with the AC brand paper filters I've always used (3" on the '69, and 4" on the '84). I have a 3" K&N filter sitting on the shelf (and will compare that to the AC filter), but have never used it as I've never seen any independent report of the filtering ability of the gauze type filters. Until I get that info, I might just keep using the AC filters for street use, and pop the K&N filter on for track days, assuming the pressure drop readings confirm that it's worthwhile.

I have heard stories about flow disruption with the filtering type covers, but never any serious technical reason why that would be. I obviously only have the capability of measuring the pressure drop (and not flow rate).

I don't expect any improvements from lowering the pressure drop to cause me to suddenly start worrying about shearing the ring gear teeth at every WOT application, but I hate to leave something on the table (powerwise) if I can get it back with minimal effort. I'm getting seriously outspent running against C5s and C6s on track days, but I still prefer to make the guys work for it a little if they're going to outrun me.

GM has used flat air filters for decades, so I can't imagine that'd be an issue.... heck, I bet you can get one of those nifty turbo twisty things off ebay to straighten out the air

Still, sarcasm aside, you propose a cool test that should give meaningful data

Milling Holley choke horn questions.

I'm considering getting rid of the choke horn, and smoothing out a bit of the upper primary area on my carb. Any comments on what to do or not do in the process?

I looked at an aftermarket centerbody replacement on Summit's website, but the two hundred dollar cost, and sourcing/quality concerns has me a bit worried about spending that sum of money. (I might need that money later to get one of those drop-in airflow adjusting sheetmetal turbo things. ;) )

Any input is appreciated.

I have a proform body on one of my carbs - it worked quite well and quality was good.... if you're interested, I can take pictures of it later.... it was run 10k ish miles (right up and until the time the felpro gaskets let loose on my chinese motor)

Yeah, I'd like to hear more of your thoughts about this piece.

A buddy of mine just a few minutes down the road has a machine shop in his garage. had him mill the air horn off my carb. it was easy for him to do. let me know if you want it done.

Hey thanks, Kevin. That keeps my options open.
