I have been looking for a steering wheel for an 82 tilt/tele column and found a few a Summit and a few other places. I find that the 76 column is excluded from any kind of fitment and that the same wheel that fits any 63-75 fits 77-82 tilt/tele.

This new 14" wheel features carved finger grips & brushed aluminum spokes. (Also known as satin aluminum spokes)

Black Leather
1963-75 Direct Bolt-On
1977-82 With Tilt/Telescopic Column

This WILL NOT fit 1976 Corvette.
Please see our other listings for a correct steering wheel for your 1976.

What's the deal? Is it the bolt pattern or ?

Maybe it was the year of the lowly "Vega" steering wheel?.....

just guessing :bonkers:

YE$S, that is my recollection also....to change over/upgrade....I dunno the mechanicals....Jim Shea is the man on that....

I know he shows here from time to time....do a search...send a PM??

I can see that a 76 might be different, that really is not what seems unusual. What does not make sense is, why would the later tilt/tele wheel fit the earlier non tilt/tele? Does this mean the early tilt/tele with fit the later non t/t?

15 years ago, I picked up a late shark TT column for the TT feature, not knowing anything about differences to my '72....I had a stock fixed wheel on the car...large diameter/thin rim....turns out the wheels themselves are interchangeable trick is, about your '76....I dunno...so the wheels themselves between later sharks and early sharks, will bolt up...

but on your shituation....Jim Shea is the man....

:oh:

No, the 1976 steering column itself is not unique, it is the same as the 1969 through 1975 columns. I am referring to the actual steering column as produced by Saginaw Steering Gear Division, GMC. I am not talking about the hardware that went on the column (Saginaw did not design nor did it produce the steering wheel hub, steering wheel, horn parts, or telescope locking parts.)

As stated above, the basic 1969 through 1976 Corvette steering columns were all basically the same. The steering wheel, horn parts, telescope lock were all the same 1969-75. The steering wheel, horn parts, telescope lock, were unique for the 1976 model year. The 1977-82 steering wheels, horn parts, and telescope lock were all basically the same.

So if you obtain an earlier year (1969-75) steering wheel with it proper hub, horn parts etc, it will fit on your 1976 column.

Also, since the 1969-76 T&T columns are the same, 1977 through 1982 T&T steering wheels, hubs, horn parts, telescope lock, etc will fit on the earlier columns as well as the 1976 column.

Thanks for the infomation however I do not have a 76 column. As I said above, I am looking for a steering wheel for an 82. I should have removed the information about the 76 fitment but it was in the ad.

If I understand correctly, any steering wheel made to fit a 69-75 Corvette (t/t or non t/t) will fit the 82 t/t?

I think that you are correct. Any Corvette steering wheel from 63 through 82that uses six small screws to mount the wheel to a steering wheel hub should fit.

Those steering wheels will not just bolt up to a 1976 column unless you supply a new hub. (All 1976 Corvette columns and 1977 through 1979 standard Corvette columns had steering wheels with the hub molded into the wheel itself.)

I think the difference is in the spoke that goes up, it's welded to the rear of the bolt flange to for a step that falls into the tilt tele ring cover. I'm not 100% sure if the earlier ones had that or not, if they don't the late wheel will not fit early columns but it will fit the other way around

Was the 76 wheel based on the Chevy Vega steering wheel? Seems like I remember something about a Chevy Vega wheel being adapted for use on Corvettes.
