I am currently replacing the motor and trans on my 82. The crossfire is being replace with a carberated 383 and new 700R4. The new 700R4 has a manual valve body that I think will be had to control with the stock shifter. I was looking for any advance on replacing the stock shifter with one that can be fitted into the console. I'm sure some modification of the console will be required. I just don't want the end result to look like a hack job.:confused:Any Ideas???

Totally not familiar with your problem, unless you have to modify the gate notches to go from one gear to another, while retaining the lockout features....I have a later shark shifter on the shelf, and certainly i'ts possible....

I too have a 4 speed auto in my '72, and so used the OEM stick shifter mounts and modded them to fit a Hurst shifter bar, chrome and says HURST on it, and has a 8 ball on top....course I have NO lockouts on it....move that lever it's into whatever gear/position moved to.....NO safety maven crap at all.....

so when driving, don't touch that lever....simple, really.....the way cars used to be....

:stirpot::lol:

IS the valve body a normal front to back pattern or is it reversed? Normal pattern I'd think you'd want some type of stop setup so you didn't accidentally yank it back to low (1) or 2 at 60 MPH- sure way to go for a spin IMHO. I'll bet that B&M or someone makes a shifter that will have the ratcheting stops- GM had them on some of the 3 speed auto cars some years back. Start in 1 and when you pushed it forward to 2 it would stop until you released pressure.

YHUp,called the Hurst 'His & Hers' shifter, with a small black knob on top...otherwise known as a Dual Gate slip the lever laterally into either parallel track, one with notches in it that when pushes forward and to the right, would catch in that next slot, release pressure, repeat......the other was like a normal automatic.....

I had one in 3 different cars through my Pontiac hotrodding daze.....

it came from a '67 GTO, which was scrapped....

Had HURST on the flattened chrome bar....I found just a bar from a HURST shifter and so modded it up to fit in this '72 here, in the stick shift position, but doing the automatic shifts....

:devil:

Since 82 CAME with a 700R, I do not understand the question.:sos:

If the manual VB is a reversed pattern he'll want/need stops to do quick gear changes.

I don't know-- do you need to push the button to drop from D to 3 to 2 to 1?
Or just to go ftom D to 3?

P1000245.jpgWith the current shifter you have to rely on the feel of the detents while trying to shift manually. (No gates) Also the stock shifter wont even allow you to pull the transmittion into low. I assume that this was a protective measure due to the really low ratio of first gear in the 700r4?? I probably should have made myself a little more clear. I feel the need for a shifter with some sort of gate or ratchet. I'm expecting this to be a bit of a white knuckle ride when finished, and want a shifter that will let me focus on other this (Like keep it on the road):thumbs:.

Check with HURST shifters, some years ago they did make a updated/continued version of the Dual Gate from the 60's.....

I dunno if it did 4 speed autos or not.....

maybe have to call the company direct, or their site....
