82 front spoiler fit

I mounted up my front spoiler today. It fits reasonably well, except where it's supposed to meet the wheel arches.

I wasn't sure if I should bolt it on and leave it at that or "glue" it on. I glued my bumper on yesterday, so it's never going anywhere but now seeing the crappy fit of the spoiler at the wheel arches, I reckon my only real option is to cut those ends off, glue the spoiler on and blend those ends into the front fender...

Is that how the 82 was in real life or an aftermarket bit? It's so different from the 81 I'm not able to say a word of assistance. I'm soon to tackle restoring the 81 spoiler so I was hoping your pics would help:confused2:

Yep, sounds like a plan. I think I'll build up with some glass on the inside of the spoiler just forward of the wheel arch so I have the thickness to run some counter sunk screws through the spoiler into the bumper so it's not just relying on the 3m8115 to hold the ends in place...

Saudi, is that the same Vette in the avatar? I've asked you this before but it certainly doesn't look like it.

Trim it down.

Looks like it outta give Heaps of Nose Down Trim!
Ducting or scoop behind the lower opening?

Cheers - Jim
That lower opening feeds directly onto the lower valance Jim. The spoiler's actually attached to the valance...

No Adam, that was some old junker I found on eBay. It was a heap of shit but the seller wanted a mint for it as it had all these "rare" factory mods and options - someone had even put a trunk in it!!

Ohhh so you were joking. I've been wondering about that for years.

You know if you hit a C3 just right the fender bonds will split and the rear deck will pop up for you! Voila trunk! Haha.:beer:

I've been thinking about this since I fitted the damn spoiler. As I said above, it fits pretty well except for where it meets the wheel arches. It would be easy to graft the spoiler on permanently at those points but then I couldn't remove the spoiler if I damaged it or something, without damage to the front fenders as well.

I need some ideas how I could mount it so that it's removeable. I could easily glass in an anchor nut on the inside of the spoiler and screw through from inside the fender to attach the spoiler, but how to finish off the edge so it looks good...?

I know its to late now, but I think I would of grafted the spoiler to the bumper and left the bumper bolt on.

What if you shave it and reform it to just meet the wheel opening and not rap it? Then you could use your anchoring idea and be done.

No, I wanted to get rid of the bumper join line, so that was always going to be "glued" on.

I'm thinking now that I'll reshape the end of the spoiler so that it meets the wheel arch before the flat outer edge. I'll build up inside the bumper with glass then grind down the outside of the bumper to a depth the thickness of the spoiler so that the spoiler end fits "in" and flush with the area I grind down. Then glass in some bolts/studs in the spoiler ends, drill corresponding holes in the bumper and bolt it up tight.

Got another gig tonight so I'll get started on it (maybe) tomorrow...

Itchy day...

...rolling around with fiberglass!

I think I've got the spoiler sorted now. It was a crappy fit where it met the wheel arch;

It was also not a great fit for the last few inches where it met the bumper;

So, I cut the end off the spoiler;

And grafted a stud onto the inside of the spoiler;

Then I shaped the inner edge of the wheel arch to take the wrapped end of the spoiler and drilled a hole for the new stud;

Then I bolted on the spoiler, putting some fiberglass filler on the inside of the spoiler along the "join line" before I bolted the spoiler on tight;

I just have to dress and shape the new glass now and the spoiler should fit pretty well - fingers crossed!
