I have a complete 1984 vette serpentine system that I want to install on my 82. So here are the questions ............

I really hate the R4 compressor and would rather have the 88-91 vette nippondenso a/c compressor will this bracket and compressor line up with the rest of the system?

Down the road I would like a rack and pinion setup but for now I will keep the stock steering stuff, how will the stock p/s stuff react to the newer type pump?

Where can I buy lines to work with this pump?

Is the waterpump frisbee disc necessary with the nippondenso compressor? I see that on all 88-91 vettes.

is my 82's harmonic balancer the same as a 84 if not will this cause an alignment problem?

I run dual electric fans so reverse rotation pump isn't a problem.

I thought about using the 88-91 remote p/s resevoir but prefer the location of the 84 in case you ask why not just a complete 88-91 serpentine system.

IF the '84 vette serp system is same as a '87, YES just change the bracket and compressor.....
BTDT on the '87 to 88+ comp change...dunno about previous C4's.....

the pump will be fine, the trick is about the output valving on flow and pressure, check with Jim Shea on that one...I maybe got lucky years ago, and screwed the stock '72 valving in place of the '87 vette pump valving...and so it worked fine with the stock setup, and then years later with the rack conversion, then the HB later on yet.....

Where can I buy lines to work with this pump?

I just cut the lines with a pipe cutter and used a brass compression union to splice the lines together the way I needed them....cheep and been there 15 years now....Lowes Depot plumbing supply....

NO CLUE....wonder if it's to do with that R4 thing, dunno

I dunno, I suspect it is, question is the pulley....which if serp, should be ok

I used the '87 vette p/s reservoir....it worked...

I got very lucky in a way, in '93 or so, a kid had totalled his '87 vette, it was a discount coupe, so nothing special at that time....but I bought the whole engine including fans and all sorts of 'junk' for 2200 bux....

I wanted to put it in a boat, but not to bee for other reasons....so parted it out, at that time no particular market for a '87 vette serp system...

but wooden I know it, I got tired of my '87 vette and sold it, and bought this '72, with the idea of upgrading to modern spec's.....

I'm going to start this project in about 3 weeks so then you will all know the outcome. I have a 87 R4 a/c bracket so if the denso don't work this one will.

The R4 certainly gets ragged a lot. Any reason?

I have a GM Performance Parts catalog SB serpentine kit on my 70 BB. Adapter plates are used to mate it to the bigger engine. I've been told that a Sanden (or nippondenso also?) AC has a longer body and may interfere with the BB valve covers (I plan to use tall covers for a stud girdle). So...I'd like to use the R4, but am I asking for trouble. The 70 AC is factory stock. The only quick turn-off with the R4 is that it's made of iron...arghh.

I just have the cfi 305 motor in mine so it should clear my valve covers fine. I just prefer the denso because it is more efficient. Also made of aluminum and can be polished LOL

The Nippondenso and Sanden are qute a bit longer that the R4 and will interfere with valve covers, heater hoses, engine pad VIN stamp, etc.. Your right, they look better but, unless you mount them waaaaay out to the side you have to move everything forward. That looks awful with the compresser hanging off the engine, even if it's polished!

In a short answer No it would not work, but you can make a couple of changes and it will work. As far as the 84 stuff goes, you are better off getting rid of it and using the 85-91 LH side engine bracket. The WP will be the same and same with the pulley. You can also throw the frisbee disk away if you already have it , it will not be needed. You will need to purchase the RH side bracket from 88-91. The bracket is discontinued but you can find them used, I may have the LH bracket laying around some where that you will need.
The 84 stuff is all by itself and will cost more money down the road to make it work than the later 85-91 pieces. You will use the 84-91 PS pump, as far as the lines, it is easy. They make -AN fillings that will fit the pump and the valve, just get the fitting and you can make new -AN lines to go between the two. The nice thing about using the 85-91 pump bracket is that it has a remote reservoir so you can mount it where you have room. The only down side to the new compressor is the price, that compressor is about a grand with the compressor and clutch assembly. I converted my 86 over to the new compressor in the late 90's and bought a used compressor and it worked great for me. As far as I know it is still working for the guy I sold the car too 6 years ago.
Thanks
Justin

Well, I basically have all 3 systems, 84, 85-87, 88-91 well the brackets and most accessories at any rate. I prefer the 84 alternator P/S pump reservoir setup & have a 90 denso compressor and bracket as well as a 85-87 r4 compressor and bracket.

Using the 84 items on the LH side and the 90 on the right could pose some problems as they were never used together. The belt may run true or it could be off a little not knowing if the spacing of the belt was the same. Not only that most of the items for the 84 are tough to get, so if you ever damage one you may have issue getting a replacement, like the reservoir. Your car though, you build it as you want, but my advice to you would be to go with the later parts, all of those will work together without you having to re-engineer anything.

Okay, so I found getting the denso to mount no a easy task. It's brack hits the a-arm and a third hole in the head is needed to mount it. I then monted the 86 bracket and compressor and it fit very nicely, sat real low so there won't be any hood issues. So what I am going to attempt is use the 84 drivers side stuff and the rest 86 parts.

I have a '88-91 compressor on my '72, it clears everything just fine....when I had earlier iron heads without that needed upper bolt on the two into the head.....I made a steel bracket tied to the intake front bolt, and then a nut/bolt on the bracket....I did the install once without it, and the bracket broke, so my welder buddy TIG'd it good....:shocking:

The R4 compressor I had was new to so that was another reason to keep it. The fuel lines seem to be fighting me pretty hard but clubber will solve the problem if need be LOL.
