I picked up a pair of AFR heads super cheap last week (Thanks Art!) for my '81. Now you have to understand that all I'm looking to do with my '81 is make it a good, strong-running "super sport". I'm not racing this car anymore and it's just my fun weekend car. I just don't want to ever get tailed by an Accord getting on a freeway on ramp again.
That and I'd like to counter the extra 30# my Richmond Street 5 is worth.
So I e-mail "sales" at AFR wanting some basic info on the heads, simple stuff like their original valve size, spring rate and rocker arm stud size. After a week I finally PM'd Tony over at CF with the model (190HST) and he e-mails me back and tells me, "oh you don't want those heads. Those are at least a 10 year old design. They won't flow anything like our new 195 'eliminator' series heads. You should just sell those off and buy the eliminators".
Sell, sell, sell.
I'm still waiting to hear back about the springs. I may replace the springs but I have to believe the springs should be worth .540" lift.
Anybody know what springs these things have?

Clutch, check around with your local area cars guys/clubs as to who is the best head shop.....go there, let them set the heads up for you, guides/seals/springs as required.....

the guy who took care of me just 3 miles away, has left the operation now, and I dunno I want to go there anymore, the replacement don't speak so good a englush, if you get my drift....pisses me off, because the next best is across the river some 20 miles one way....

:suicide:

You should match the valve springs to the cam anyway. More spring than needed and the whole valvetrain suffers from wear, too little and the valves float/bounce all over the place.

I have an e-mail in to them now to see what the original springs were rated for. If they're pretty close, I may just run them as is. It's yet another budget issue.
Speaking of, anybody remember a set up used to run on some high revving roller motors where there was a second set of spring just for the lifters? I don't know if there was another specific name for the set up but I thought it was pretty trick, and a damn good idea.

It's called a "Rev kit". They go back at least 35 years or more. Keeps the lifter on the lobe and does it without adding to the seat pressure.31D0ZM0ZX8L._SL500_AA200_.jpg

There were AFR190 headed SBCs making 500hp NA before they came out with the 195s. They'll do just fine for you. Tony is trying to sell you on some new heads. Not saying they're not better, but the 190s are pretty damn good heads.

I would sure like to try some AFR 210's on my blown 383....would be a good testimonial for AFR v. my Edelbrock Victor Jr's..(Hint hint Tony M)...lol
