I almost torched the engine. For those that didn't see, the new-to-me 93 1-ton/454 broke a piston. So this last weekend I yanked the motor and overhauled it. Got it in yesterday and started it today. I made marks so I set my timing roughly where it was when I pulled it, did the 2000rpm for 20 minute thing to break in the cam and all seemed well. Then I started monkeying with the timing to set it to specs. Not realizing it, I knocked the vacuum line to the MAP sensor off. Holy crap! It didn't feel right but it wasn't too bad cruising in my neighborhood where the speed limit is only 25, but as soon as I got on a major road with a 45mph speed limit the problem was apparent. Didn't get it in the red but I'm pretty sure the temp was already in the 230-240 range, on a fresh motor no less. Aaug! Took me a bit to figure out what happened but I reconnected the tube and set timing and looks like I dodged a bullet.

The timing isn't what did it. The tube off the MAP sensor is what did it. The computer had no idea what the hell was going on. Not to mention the 1/4" vacuum leak I introduced with the tube off.

Apparently not. I've put almost 100 miles on it in the last couple days and runs like a champ. Little bit of a rough idle but I don't know if that has anything to do with the cam or what. I can tell you I'm totally unimpressed with TBI. I gave it some serious consideration for the Vette but ain't happening now. Just watching the injectors pulse gas and it pool on the throttle blades at idle, don't see a point to it. Either all carb or all injection, nothing half assed.
