Anyone have experience with the Edlebrock 1406 carb?

Working on a vette with a friend. '79 that has a 1406 on it. The car has been sitting for a while and the gas was gumming up the carb. I took it off and cleaned the snot out of it this morning (or so I thought), but we put it back on and it won't idle. So I can't even set my base timing because the thing just won't idle. I have a good pump shot and I can hold a steady engine speed around 2000rpm, but anything below that and it dies. So I'm thinking it has to be with the idle circuit but I pulled the needle jets out when I disassembled everything and shot carb cleaner through them and it appeared the ports were open. I pulled all jets, made sure they were clear and all orifices were open. I may have missed something and can't find much info on the Edelbrock website about overhauling, but I know someone here has some experience with these things.
Whatcha got?

Pull the carb and look at the impression pattern on BOTH sides of the gasket....make damn sure no room for overlapping problems where air sucks in....commom problem on many intakes years ago....

obvious on the vacuum lines, all plugged except for dizzy advance, and that to go to the full intake mani vacuum to eliminate any other device at least for test purposes....

I guarantee you there's still crap in there, one thing I hate about these cabs is the nickel or whatever it is finish that flakes off in the bowls and f's them up

When I got Ol' Red it had 2 of them on it. The po had put something in the gas an octane. Booster or something whatever it was it turned the inside of both carbs green. Plugged up, stuck, just overall. Nasty. Brutal 64 cleaned them up and I still need to put themback on. At least the floats move. Now

Same shit on my buddy Eric's boat, on a 350 Mercruiser, Edel AFB and it would start/idle but not take the gas even at idle, floats and airvalves and all that internal shit was so badly corroded must have been a tablespoon of crap come outta that thing, I told him to tape off the industion, forget it for this winter, stick a piece of plywood over the tape and a brick to hold it all down....gave the carb back all soaked in WD40, and cleaned up....store it till March....

I dunno if it was water in the gas, or just condensate, but it's under a hatch cover and a canvas but with that bilge there, I think it's just flat out too much humidity.....running that damn salt water through the engine is no good either....my boat had a sea water/coolent heat exchanger on it, nice bronze thing.....and I never had any issues....

Thanks guys. I guess I'll be pulling it back off. Seems everything else works fine except that idle circuit. Like I said, I can get a good pump shot and it will idle above 2000rpm, I just can't get a decent idle.
After all my headaches with bad gas in the Datsun I was pretty thorough about cleaning the crap out of it.
