I'm putting my new motor back in and was mounting my blowproof bellhousing + billet flywheel.

Lots of grinding on the block saver plate to get the plate to go over to starter but i'm finally there, but there is the next issue already.

I have a 168 tooth billet flywheel and was going to mount my spare starter that was in better condition.

The flywheel seems to touch a shim at the end of the gearshaft.

You can see the rusted shim at the end of the shaft.

I was surprised so I compared it to my original starter.

There is no shim. Well let's say that it looks like it was grind away...

Anyone run into this and how did you solve it ?

PS : the original flywheel was also 168 tooth, but an original GM part.

you have a 168 tooth flywheel now. how many teeth did you have on the original flywheel with the starter that you are trying to use. and i would have to agree. they make some really trick starters out there now with all different kinds of way to adjust them.

i don't know i've ran into multiple starter issues over the years....aftermarket starters not working with stock flywheels and aftermarket flywheels not working with stock starters. if everything was right then you would not have an issue. i would try to call the company that manufactured the flywheel. last issue i had like this there was nothing about it in any of the descriptions or product manuals but when i called tech support they knew right away what was going on.

I had the starter checked, turned out fine. It just needed grease.

I shimmed the inboard bolt untill I could get a circlip in between the teeth. That's wat I went with.

It's not the basic cost of the starter, but due to all the rest it will at least cost me double that amount.
