When it comes to boats I am sort of buy-sexual.....I can swing either way...

but for you boaters out there.....what is the count???

Sailing or Power....

and if Power or Sail...what size boats?? rags, engines, etc.....

:huh2:

RAGS! Not Riches!!

I'm a rag man.
Have owned and been living aboard for past 21 years.
Annapolis/L.A./Mexico/SOPAC/NZ/AUS/INDO/SING/Malaysia/Thailand. Actively "world cruising"for past 14 years.
She's 54 LOA/41OD, 38,000#, a HC-41T. FIberglass and loads of teak. Turbo Yanmar 4cyl. Added an extra fuel tank - 150L (does that say somethin about sailing ?)
Cutter Rig, MAX Roach Main, 2000FT2 Spinnaker+Roller Headsail+hanked staysail.
I designed and built the Hard Dodger and wind steering.
Solar panels, wind gen, 1200aH batteries, 2x alternators (400amps, and 150amps).
Have had to leave her behind - for a bit while returning to US on a few occasions- and again now to renter Active Duty. When through with this hitch, we will return and continue to South Africa, and across the South Atlantic.
Longest non-stop (days) 27. Best single day 200+NM. Most wind 73+kt - under reefed 2x headsail only. Most wind full sail - 47kts. Fastest, 16+ kts SOG. Most water on board - not intentional 2000 pounds (leak).
Always happy to spin a sea tale or two. ;)

Cheers - Jim
Will drop in a pic or 2 tonight.

But have you hoisted any scurvy dogs from the yard arm?

It has been well known for decades in the American Sailing/cruising community that we have to be VERY careful when cruising the Gulf/Caribbean islands and such as drug runners/pirates/whatEVER will hijack the boat especially at night, kill the occupants, toss the bodies to the sharks, and commandeer the boat to drug running.....

so it's NO JOKE, someone armed pretty good has to stand guard at all times....

i'ts no Somali shituation but just as outta control...almost....

:amazed::clobbered:

Power

It's an 18 ft. runabout for us. 190 hp, can do about 60 mph on a good day. Most of the time it's just sight seeing and sun bathing along the Delaware and Chesapeake.

Where to start? All power, 30 and 38 Scarabs, a couple 100+ mph cats, and a few others. but now I put along on Lake of the Ozarks in my old 42' Chris Craft (Ford 427 powered). I've owned iy for 16 years, my dad owned it the previous 12.

Sweet live aboard:)
One of these days.....

Always been a powerboater although, in the hands of a skilled sailor, I love ragboats. Just too much like work for me (lol).

When you said "blowboat" I had something entirely different in mind:

This is some of the crap we operate in.
Yes, that's an airboat, and yes....those are rapids;) The 2 are not supposed to mix, but Brian mixes them rather well:)

He's one of our team members, a fellow instructor who has taught all over the world. Military, civilian, government....you name it!
Hell of a pilot and makes it look so damned easy!

I'm currently building a new rescue boat for use on our team. 20'+hydraulic rake, cadi engine, hi-sides, partial deck, blah blah blah.....

My next pleasure boat will be a fixed hull, I think you called them "stinkpots?" (lol)

Hopefully something I can actually spend some time on....plans are to make it my "office.":)

Phantomjock....sounds like a hell of a life my friend.

Be careful out there.

I presume DUAL 427's for something THAT size.....a few years ago a old friend had a 28' CCraft up in St. Mary's Ga. just north of the line, about a hour away....we put two 305 Chevy engines in it, and a complete rewire....
turned out the guy who owned it could park it great at the dockage, and drive it on the river, but had NO open water experiences.....he almost broached us in a kick up out there....:waxer::flash:

Skipper,
That's just plain nuts! That looks like flood water rapids, nothing should be out in that!
mrvette,
yep twin 427s, but the boat weighs around 32,000lbs, so it is not a speed demon.

Snicker, you didn't know Carl, on the EMT/fire/rescue squad in Mongomery Co. Md.....drove their Potomac River craft, just below Great Falls....

that river gets tough sometimes, they loose some 6 people/year on it....

:crutches::hissyfit:

And yes, I have sailed/power boated from the Susquehanna river south to Point Lookout on the 'Peak'....eastern shore included....

:D

Here is what I sold a few years back and regret selling it! Can't find any of my pics...found this one on the net.

Four Winns 268 Vista Cruiser with a Volvo Penta 5.7 Duo Prop, Deep V hull, sleeps 4-6, shower, kitchen, stove, generator, AC/Heat......loved that boat!

We have a marina at the Lake of the Ozarks and have had alot of boats.Skaters,scarabs,100mph bass boats, cruisers, and pontoons, ect. One of my personal favorites for speed and handling was this 20' Seebold eagle w/300+hp V-8 outboard.I mis that boat!boat_7.jpg

We had a 37ft Owens tahitian aft cabin w/twin 327s,but lost it to a storm. The power went out and the bilge failed. We came home to find it half sank. We was saving it and winning when a curious family came from accross the lake to watch and put their wake through the back windows and down she went for good.!We blew it apart tryin to raise it with air bags.Sad,,it was a beautiful boat to restore. We had to cut it up where it sat.The twin 327s and velvet drives still sit in my crappy bed!!

Pull the 427 Fords and put in a pair of Cummins 5.9's. Those 427's are far to valuable to be used in a boat, and your fuel bill would drop drastically too !

Showme,
First off, I'm sitting in my boat at Lake of the Ozarks right now at the 31mm. Love the tunnel hulls. I used to run a 21 Eliminator Daytona with a 300 Evinrude at the lake and George Winter park. Running at George Winter was interesting since the Seebolds would test down there. Even when I was running 100mph, the Seebold race boats could run circles around me.

Ozzy,
Considering an engine swap before I kill one of these 1968 vintage 427s. They're center oilers but the cobra kit guys still love them. The funds are not there for diesels (motor, trans, shafts, struts, props, etc). So considering 454s, or maybe a marinized LS/LQ motor. I'm hooked on fuel injection after my corvette engine swap.

You nailed it Gary!!
(lol) I agree, but that's what we train for and why we exist in the first place;). We agree to do it and "they" give us furloughs from the :bonkers:nut farm (lol)

In that particular pic, he was on a live mission for people trapped in flood water/swiftwater up in Ohio.

The "pilot" is one of the best airboat pilots in the country. He teaches all over the world for various gov't groups, the military and private corps.
The guy riding shotgun (with the helmet on) is a professional Firefighter and a volunteer team member who rides with Brian when he goes out.

Ok, now I'm jealous!

My goal is to one day say the same thing...only from the ICW somewhere in Florida:)

A lot of the airboat operators and manufacurers have made the switch to FI LS engines....light weight, tons of power and touque, easy to repair/mod, and can be serviced dang near anywhere!:D

Gary,I pulled that V-8 from an Eliminator hull!We popped the 280 offshore.I'm a merc man normally but, that V-8 was a blast!(Thirsty though!)I didn't get to go down this weekend, but we are just up on the 42mi mark across from the rock that they jump from. The marina/shop(We work on everything now)is off of 7hwy by J road.We used to be Hyper sports now it is TDC motorsports. We build Bikes,Hotrods, boats, pwcs, and repair trolling motors, ect,.My brother runs it.I had to make a livin in the city.We get along better this way too!LOL!
We will have to get together sometime!

I bet a pair of 6.0lq4s could be adapted pretty reasonable to do the trick. Not much would have to be changed to adapt them. The exhaust would be the only investment. The motors are cheap enough.Could be a fun project!

Yep, been thinking about the LQ4s. My 427 have 400ft/lbs of torque from 2000rpm up, so I was a little concerned about the LQ4s low end torque. But nothing repropping or running a different reduction gear couldn't fix.
The only other issue is that I'm running paragons that are pretty much bulletproof. I would have to counter rotate one of the LQs if I wanted to keep the transmissions. I dont think that's possible with the LQ/LS motors.
Manifolds...turns out the 351C hardin log manifolds area pretty good fit. I've alread picked up a pair. Crusader does sell an LQ based motor, so those manifolds are available too.

Do those units run off of a bell housing or drive shaft. If its a shaft you could front mount a shaft and mount one backwards.I'm not familiar with your trannys. The exhaust and intake can be reversed.
