C3 wiper motor replacement issues?

Clinging to my guns and religion in KCMO.
I'm running out of ideas on how to take more weight out of the '69, and I'm pondering trying to find a smaller, lighter wiper motor out of a later GM product the next time I'm at the junkyard. I'm curious about the electrical aspects of the change. It's kinda late in the evening for me to do any heavy duty thinking, and I don't have the energy at the moment to study the wiring diagram in the service manual, so I'm enlisting some input here. There's two interrupt/enable switches on the car that I'm trying to decide if that's an issue or not. The rotating switch under the steering column just (I assume) cuts power to the motor so it's easier to change wiper blades, and the plunger switch on the firewall just (again, I assume) enables power to the motor once the wiper door fully opens. So, is this present ('69) setup really any different than any of the other millions of wiper motors on GM cars? How about the variable speed aspect of most later motors? The present motor is just a two speed item. I rarely drive the car in the rain, but I still want to have operating wipers.

Thoughts, opinions, suggestions?

Thanks,
Mike

Me not being too concerned with weight savings, I never bothered to get a lighter wiper motor, but I know full well they are out there in junkyards as I noticed that once while doing something else....later/smaller/more square looking motor similar to later power window motors....how much weight is saved is ???? I dunno....

Electrically, I have kept my operating wiper door and electrified the operation with a simple relay logic thing, and two Radio Shack burglar alarm contacts, one to detect door closed, one to detect door open switches and bar magnets simply held in place with my favorite RTV....

surely you can figger out the logic, I can email you a wiring diagram of what I did, but you being a EE probably do much better...

I did a simple 555 timer for intermittent wipers in place of the switch....

Wow, with all the weight reduction measures GM took with the C4, I guess they never thought about the wiper motor. The C3 motor looks like a starter motor for a small car!

Not an automotive project, but I used a mid 90's Camaro wiper motor that had a built in pulse board. It was waaaaay smaller/lighter than the C3 motor.

Why not add 1hp to make up for the weight? Just think there are better ways to lose weight then through the wiper motor. Like say a plastic vacuum booster, aluminum master cylinder with plastic reservoir

Horsepower won't get you through a corner quicker. Or help you brake quicker.

Already have the lightweight master cylinder, and I haven't seen a plastic booster that will fit a decent piston size master cylinder.

Much less decent stopping power.....

At 215lbs I have about 30 lbs that I can loose - it would lower the center of gravity and won't cost a lot :smash:

sorry, can't help you on the wiper motor weight but if yours works I want it if you have no other use for it.... would be nice to have wipers that work :D

Gene, I love ya man, but your hydraburst shit gets old. FWIW, I've yet to see a HB equipped car out on a track.

Dunno, no argument, ....I suspect it's mostly because of weight with pumps, boosters, and such, most track cars are manual brakes anyway....I didn't get all technical about weight on my conversion, but with that aluminum master included in the swap, it's about even....

and like I said, I love a ~2" pedal as opposed to 5" or so....

:thumbs::)

Hydroboost is not a cure for leaking systems.... so many threads about this all over the WWW..... the method of assist does not matter, it will not increase stopping power.... :chinese:
:tomato:
hey, let's turn this into a HydroGene thread just to piss Turtle off.....

I don't think i can get any more pissed off with the Patriots losing tonight. But give it a shot.

Maybe Gene has a story about that. I'm sure he can give me an analysis.

No cow in that stuporbowl fight, could care less, the commercials were interesting, especially that one by Eastwood for Chrysler....crossroads....

really talking about the coming election....

as for HBoost, I know my A-B comparison and much better pedal and operation, feels like a hydraulic system, not a sucky vacuuuuuuum setup it works for ME, if it don't work for you, well, you must be just 'special'.....:friends::D

Take the wipers off. Use an onion instead.:tomato:

Smearing an onion on a windshield is 100 years ahead of RainX. Same deal. Makes it sheet.
