On the canister vacuum line to the carb Is this a closed system? Reason for question when I plug off the carb fitting it runs a little better like maybe there is a vacumn leak.

All I can do is describe my '72, the round canister had 3 hoses on it, far as I can remember...one to the rear top driver's side valve....other larger one to the top of the carb...above the throttle plates, somehow...the other small one went to mani vacuum...but I can't remember if it was full vac or not...I think it was full vac....

so the tank/canister never had full vac applied, just above the blades...a slight suck...

over the years I noticed the valve on my canister failed...open...so I leave the actuation valve line off, and leave the main fume line attached....honestly I dunno why that line isn't a direct shot and hell with the canister entirely....

:surrender:

Are you referring to the vacuum canister Darrow?

yes the one that is hooked to the gas tank and the carb vacuum looks like its a closed system .

You mean the evap canister? No it's not a closed system. When the purge valve is open air comes into the canister and is sucked into the carb (obviously) and this takes with it stored hydrocarbons (tank fumes) from the charcoal canister, so you're adding fuel & air to the motor that is not coming from the carb itself.

If the purge valve was bad or stuck open woukd that allow to much air? where is the purge valve?

It's that black knobby looking thing on top of the canister. Darrow, I bought a new charcoal cannister for the 81 from Rock Auto. About $45.00 I think.

Thanks right now I have it plugged off and have went up to 75 jets it is running a lot brtter but not good enough. Will be up your way tomarrow to get a set of 76 jets and maybe a new canister. I am still having a problem above 3900 rpms, ( popping ) once I get there it fine lots of power. Then when I get this carb down I will go back to the Q jet and save this one for my next project.

btw the 73 has to have the 700r4 rebuilt.......

Curious about that 700, bit of history, miles, build, install, engine, diffy... etc....

I had my share of troubles, so just for the knowing....:fishing:
