Been looking for a car lately and have seen some dealers attach a Carfax report to the ad. When you look, it describes the history of the car (when it was registered, bought or sold). It will also show "service" without a description.

Is "service" and oil change or and engine rebuild? Does a regular Car fax have more detail?

I think it's a dealer only thing and only at the dealer that did the work. I looked at a car a few years ago and asked the same question. They ended up giving me a listing of the "service" items, some of which identified a problem with the steering that they never really sorted out. When I bought the carfax on line, none of these items were listed.

Service items included everything, including oil changes and inspections.

... and reported insurance claims. If you want reason number 2000 for not using a dealer for anything but warranty work; there it is, they'll report the work they did and use the report to give you less money for your car.
