Any tricks to getting these in?

I have a cheap instal tool...basically a cut down screwdriver......

I tried freezing them, but no go........maybe a little vaseline???? That might do the trick.

Should have said fasteners. Fastens front carpet to the firewall.

20 bux+ ship and wait?? for 6-8 of them?? how about 2 bux/dzn at the parts house down the street??

I just push with my thumb or tap with a small hammer...

:clobbered:

I didn't get them from Ecklers...just put up the link to show the pic.

They are rubber. No way they are going in with a hammer or thumb...tried that. Put a dab of high temp bearing grease on them and with some muscle and some twisting, I got them in.

Put a long punch in that hole in the center. That will stretch them out and they're easy to install.

From Eckler's website:

Did you know? Many people in our hobby refer to carpet fasteners as carpet retainers.

I didn't even know I needed them .... :trumpet:

I'm still trying to work out where they go and what they do

They go through the carpet and into the firewall. Keeps the carpet from folding down. A really good adhesive could probably keep it up there without the fasteners. There are 3 on the passenger side, 3 on the driver's side. There's also 3 holding up the carpet on the rear storage area.

I can's say about later C-3's , but the early 68-72 used a firewall insulator that used those holes to keep it in place. There were several holes in the firewall to hold it in place. The original material used a jute like material impreginated with a wax like substance. This is what a 69 insulator looked like, for example.

I suppose using those plugs is an OK idea to hold the carpet, but having a good insulating material farther up the firewall and under the dash will keep the interior cooler. The insulator would go under the heater box and fit tightly around the steering column. It appears to be missing in the above photo.

Thanks. I was wondering what that thing was. Mine is held in place by fasteners that look like the carpet jobbies but are flat on top. At the bottom of that thing, there are cutouts and that's where the carpet fasteners go.

That's were the old ones came out when I pulled the factory carpet so that is where the new ones went in.

I think my ratty old carpet is being held in via fusion action with the floor pan - it is the scabbiest shit I've ever seen!

I guess I'll find out about the plugs when I go to pull it out and put my new stuff in. No doubt I'll need plugs and won't have any
