Coil spring on window regulators, how to install?

Anyone know the correct way to install these? With my regulators in the up position they seem to slip right on but have a little play in them. They never had the springs to begin with so I have no idea how much tension was on them in the up position to begin with.

They install with the regulator all the way down. They are very tight to get on there. The spring tension helps the motor push the window up,

I will try that and next step new regulators hahaha ... but almost 400.00 for the pair is making me want to try and fix mine.

They are very easy to fix, jsut replace those crappy split rivets with some small round head cap screws and nuts

Okay so I had a little iniative and a 40once beer to spare and decided to give these spring a shot. In the up position they go on very easily however that didn't seem right. One full turn of tension is just way to much and the regulator can barely move.

So here is what I did, installed the spring as shown and then with vise grip wound the spring around while the regulator was in the up position. Whether it is right I am not sure but one thing is for sure if I try to do it in the down position it doesn't do very good.

Clocked half a turn out puts a lot of tension on the spring in the up position and basically now the regulator is pretty slow going down but the weight of the window may change that. However going up it runs at about twice the speed. when you are bring the spring around with vise grips keep about 1/2 the spring in it's slot and the vise grip not overly tight. Then when you bring the spring around to the stud part just tap it down and out of the vise grips hold with a hammer.

Well, think about it, the full UP position is when the spring is relaxed....I just redid my pass side not so long ago with some junkyard springs....from a pickup HOOD....counted the coils, same size...cut the outer loop or two, and heated/bent the outer coil end into the tab to catch the install....

runs up/down like a charm for 5 bux.....

Yes if the spring is is not turned back 180 degrees in the up position the spring is completely relaxed. When I installed the spring with virtually no tension the regulators still seemed like there was no spring even on them.

But by turning the spring half a turn back then using vice grips to pull the spring back to that stud there is a lot of tension on the spring in the up position.

My issue before was no spring and the window would drop so fast I was surprised the door glass never shattered then when in the up position the door glass would start going down just driving the car around. I tried the window with the spring just hand installed and not turned back half a turn and the door glass would still start to fall down a bit from driving.

I'm going to install the regulator later today and will tell you how it works with the spring turned back.

With the spring installed the window works great now. I was worried the tension on the spring causing the motor to go down slow was wrong but the weigh of the glass changes the speed and up and down the motor runs at the same speed almost. the regulators are alot smoother moving now and the glass doesn't slam into the door when it is lowered.

now have to do the other regulator and once I can get the windows up the 82 will be moved outside and work will begin on it.

Well I got the passenger window up and reached back in there and it's coil spring is still on the regulator so that is one less thing I have to mess with. Now with both windows up I can bring the 82 outside. First time it has been outside in 10 years.
