My Computer is getting slower and slower, yet I have tons of memory space left. All I can figure is that I need to clean some of the crap off of my PC, but I don't know how. Can anyone help me with this?

Thanks!

I can't help much but I'll be interested in the responses that you get from those in the know.

One thing I can suggest is deleting your temporary internet files. Every time my son plays an on line game, my computer slows down to a crawl.

Go to your toolbar and choose "tools." Then choose "options." Last, choose "delete temporary internet files."

If a progress bar pops up and it takes more than a couple of seconds to run, you had a lot of files. This should help some.

Don't laugh too hard, but my guru says to blow out the machine with a air jet about every couple months.....lack of airflow will trigger a protect in the CPU ans slow it down.....strange as it seems,:smash:

Click on my computer
Right click on properties
Click on disc clean up
After that runs,
click on "automatically fix errors" (Restart may be necessary)
after that runs
click on disk defragment.
After that, should run faster.
Use THAT order of chores.

Thank you gentlemen, for your responses. I have been doing a variation of these maintenance chores (disk clean up, defragmenter, etc...) but will most certainly try your methods.

You need to clear up resourses mostly ram memory and hidden hdrive files and spyware etc that is running in the background that you don't know about.

You should make a backup (imaging software) of the hardrive before any changes are ever made, but most people don’t. At least save important data to disk.

If you have a bunch of icons on your desktop, put the shortcuts on the Start menu and delete the screen icons. They use ram. You can make subdirectories to keep single columns.
Disable any progs installed that you absolutely don’t need, usually the ones that are beside the clock on lower right. They can be disabled by one of the free progs below or by Start>Run>msconig>PK>startup tab
Disable any Sreensavers, background pics are OK
Enable moniter and screen shutdown at your interval preference.
Disable standby mode in Power Scheme
Disable Hibernate, unless you have a laptop AND actually use it.
Make sure you have the virtual memory set to “Let Windows choose”
Install the 3 free progs below.
Don’t choose any addons like Chrome or Yahoo etc when installing.
Reboot
Run Adaware first after getting the latest definition file.
Follow the prog instructions.
Run Ccleaner after setting up the options you want.
Empty Recycle bin just for fun.
Turn off “System Restore” You will lose it's history.
Run Defraggler.
It might take a while the first time, so maybe do it overnite, or last thing
Reboot and run thru them again and reboot.
Turn “System Restore on again.
Should notice a marked improvement.

There are other things you can do like playing with the virtual memory and page file etc, but that gets sort of involved and too much to type the instructions now.
The biggest mistake people make is installing every piece of bs free prog that splashes up. Don’t do it.

Download Adaware Anniversary Edition
http://www.lavasoft.com/products/ad_aware_free.php
You may find hundreds of instances of spyware etc that works in the background.
Use weekly

Download Ccleaner
http://www.ccleaner.com/update/?v=2.03.532&l=1033
Dumps almost everything, like cookies and histories etc, can be set to work on startup.
Install only as a addon to the right click recycle bin menu, no yahoo toolbar etc.

Download Defraggler
http://www.defraggler.com/download
Better than MS, can defrag files and directories separately too.
Use weekly.

Next time get:
Trend Micro Internet Security (Anti Virus)
Probably the best out there because it’s good and more importantly, it doesn’t take over the computer every other time you click something.
Most of the others are bloatware and hog resources.
About $40.00 a year for 3 computers, cheaper for renewals
Works in background and updates itself.

download hijackthis and post the log, that will show if you have a bunch of junk running.

I agree with Trend Micro, have tried most any out there, it's the only one that doesn't seriously bog down the system.

Wife's computer is totally protected, we just do what our geek says on that, but I run totally naked, all they will find is car shit, rather boring.....every time I have run any AVirus in the past, the machine ran like crap....I could have hand written the freeking request faster....

:hissyfit::crutches:

No computer is totally protected, every security solution is not 100% fool proof.
