I am learning, but still quite computer stupid.
I installed a new power supply yesterday, because the fan was croaking. That went fine. I Installed two "gig sticks" to help the speed, and that went VERY well.
I installed two DVD re-writters, because my old reader/writters craoked a wile back. That went not so good.
The machine recognises they are there, but after software install, the machine says no device detected. Going thru the troubleshoot, I get an error code 41. I do the drill down on that trying new drivers, and it says "correct drivers installed.
One guru suggested, since my motherboard is 8 years old, and the DVD 's are new, I may need to upgrade the "bios." The MB is just not new enough to talk to the DVD's. Sound correct? Any ideas or help would be great.
The two new devices were IDE , and did not work. I took them back, and bought two SATA drives instead. Same result.

Linda said it does sound like your mommy board is too old,

take all the gear back and buy a new computer....

:drink:

well, I updated the bios and the drivers for the MB. Still no luck. Windows sees it, it just won't install the driver for it.

Found the cure. Had to remove the high and low filters on the registry. PITA, but all good now.:D

Jeff,

Glad you got it fixed, but a computers life span is around 2 years. After that it's just out of date. Computers are just to cheap these days.

How on earth did you think to try that?

Found the fix on Plextors website.

Later, I had to uninstall the drivers, reboot, and reinstall Roxio.

Now, drve D works, and drive E can't see the disk.

I hate this computer shit.

"Error reading tray icon 1->cannot create system shell notification icon."

I wish I knew WTF that meant.:hissyfit:

What are you running? XP Gold? That message means that during startup an active program can't find the system tray icon, those next to the clock on the taskbar and as such can't drop their icon in the tray to notify you it's running..you also won't be able to access it's system tray functions.

Maybe it's a problem with startup, it's most likely a sequence issue. It's easy to check, it takes a while for explorer to full start up, however if you log out and log on again, everything is already running and the personal settings are loaded, including the startup list and as such everything that's in the taskbar. If the stuff appears then, then it's a timing issue.

Are you auto logging in on startup? If you are, this won't work..however if you have to enter your login details, wait a little before doing so...let the thing do it's magic and wait till the disc activity dies down.

Thanks Marck. I'll give that a try. If I can get E up and running properly, I'm done for now.
I DO want to install a 2end hard drive once I get a few paychecks. Blizzcon starts in a week, and I always have a few extra $$ after that show. They really expanded this year. The only show that has grown and not shrunk.:bounce:

OK, I byte, what's Blizzcon?? computer show??

World of Warcraft online computer game convention. Blizzard entertainment. It's quite the deal Gene. Role playing game that has quite the following.

What you need to do is cry on the shoulder of one of those gamers. Get them to help you out. Problem is if they hook you up, you'll probably be stringing new wire from the pole out in the yard. Or try and connect to the 'net and the room lights go dim.

Check to make sure that the burners are reckognized by the mb at boot by watching the bios screen at startup and/or hit the break/pause button if it goes by too fast.
Check in the bios setup screens that the 2 drives are found and the sata channels enabled.
You can also switch the sata cables to different channels (ports), sometimes they confilct when sata was in it's infancy and still show up.
After xp has fully loaded check device manager for errors on drives.
Check in drive properties and disable windows recording (tab) (conficts with most software)

Besides upgrading your bios, you must also update the mb chipset, that is what controls all the add on devices etc.
Update the firmware on the new Plextor drives.
Update all drivers for Roxio.

Roxio has historically been another bullshit prog that takes over the computer adding low level drivers initiating at startup and always having bit running in the background.

If your drives are seen by xp before Roxio install and not after, then remove Roxio, all registry entries too, and install this non resident free program. It doesn't install drivers and does not stay resident, so it can be left installed, sort of like the old Plextools software. Good for testing if nothing else.

Noonie, sometimes you REALLY scare me with what you know. I'll try all that BS too. Right now, it seems to work with one drive, but two messes it up. Even though I am on 2 different SATA ports, it doesn't like more than one drive installed.:confused2:

Well, you doing better than Fe next door, she caught some virus from overseas email.....and it wiped out her machine so bad, our guy Phil had to physically get into the machine, disconnect a bunch of hardware, go down into I suppose BIOS, and do some majic.....but the funny is, he managed to save some of her shit, he did a wipe on the C drive, and rebooted everything off CD, fresh install....I used to be able to do that, years ago, but I forget whatever I thought I know, and what with today's tech.....I just give up and call him....course in wife's case there is MUCH too much at stake, this machine could be stolen, and I"d just smile....steal the router/modem next to it and out comes Mr. Benelli....Linda is smart enough and has the gear enough to do a daily backup on her puter on a external drive...so all her client shit is safe....

you know, maybe to put that damn drive somewhere it won't be stolen if the machine is....

Making progress. Chipset driver updated in 2004. Roxio updated, and one drive works. I need to contact Plextor tomarrow, and see what they say.

NO NO NO

They are all junk. Don't know which of the 2 is worse. As I said earlier, they install low level drivers etc and you never want that. XP and the chipset work great by themselves.

Tell me what you want to do with your dvd recording and I'll see what I have used with no problems.
