Crash testing

Some comments on this video from Shovelhead Forum

"Impresive video, and I am sure that it served a purpose. But I have my doubts. Here is what I saw. Clean test room, tracks in the floor that the cars were hooked to to maintain desired speed and direction, point of impact was left headlight to left headlight not a centered head-on, the engine compartment of the BelAir folded on impact like there was no engine in it, a lot of brown dirt/dust comming out of the body and frame of the BelAir, the BelAir seat was ripped right out of the floorboard, etc. I think this BelAir was a junk yard dog, fluffed up with Chinese aftermarket parts and didn't even have a drivetrain in it. After all, this video was made to sell a 09 Malibu, not a 59 BelAir. "

"Saw a test years ago something like this. Don't remember who or what it was for but the guy was showing how to set up a controlled demo crash to show how good or bad to make a car look. Not saying that was what happened here.
To make the car of choich look bad.
Remove the hoods seconderary hood latch, (sometimes the first latch also)
Remove the radiator support corner bolt on the side to be wrecked.
Remove engine. And tranny. And drive shaft.
Remove the drivers side door latch;
Remove the right side fender bolts where it mounts to the cab.
Remove seat bolts on one side. And seat belts at the floor.
Remove the drivers side cab to frame mount bolts.
There are some other tricks like adding fluid containers in just the right spots to get the desired effects. And have one car set up at a hight that it is sure to go over the fame of the other in order to get the maxim effect.
Not saying thats what they did here but I'm always a little skeptical of things when someone is trying to accheive a desired effect or test out come."

"I agree about the dust comming out of the 59. 50 year old rust bucket set up to look like a new car. cut all the guts out and build up the 09 and prove something to the people you want to sell to. We ran demolition derby for years, and as with everything else, " only the strong survive" Same year and same model, head on and one folds up and the other bounces off with little damage. I guess they'll sell a lot of those to idiots that believe that BS"

Actually, it appears that the Impala wasn't is such bad shape.

I'm sure that it didn't have all of it's original structural integrity intact after 50 years but christ, it certainly seems to me to be a ridiculous waste to prove some kind of point that would be obvious to any reasonable person.

Hey, I'm not particularly fond of '59 Chevys myself, but somebody took pains to preserve that car, and there are those that would kept it going for another 50 years. (Or make a low rider out of it! :mime::mime:)

I know how I would have felt if they used a C3 to prove their point.

I flat out don't trust IIHS any more than CPSC.....or Nader his self for that matter....I have a friend who knew all of them back when....

my buddy was a fence sitter on the issue, but as years went by became more and more critical of them.....

so having said that, and reading the above about rigging tests, I have to say that hood on the old Imp came up rather easily, and the collapse of the body seems to indicate rigging on their part....why I say is a unfortunate first hand accident...

some unibody Dodge Dart pulled out in front of my '67 Grand Prix, the one with the operating headlights, and the bat mobile styling, the kid was making a left hand turn and pulled out right in front of me, obviously didn't look....

so smack at maybe 40 mph, hard to say how much speed I burnt off in some 20' of sliding, anyway, the GP did rather well, certainly better than the Imp above....the Dart actually fared worse than the GP, but the parts were more available, then, and so it was on the road faster, took over a month just to find the parts, as the wreck was in the early 70's....

Wish I had that GP back again, it had the KHayes 8 bolt aluminum brake drums rare enough back when....considered desirable more from looks than performance.....14" wheels though.....
