Door Stuck

Good news is I have to burn some remaining vacation days b4 year end. So I started the interior replacement. First up new door panels....easy first job...

So I get the passenger side done, no problems. I went with bare panels and just transferred hardware, cut/fit, greased mechanisms....yada yada yada...looks great.

On to the dirvers. Same procedure. After I greased the mechanisms, I checked the key lock. Slammed the door...maybe a little too hard. Anyway, the door latch jammed. It happened to me before a few years back. Since I had the door panel off, no biggie, just pressed the lever and released the latch.

For future reference, it is the lever that the screw driver is resting on that you push down on to release the latch. You can probably get to it through the top if your door panels are on, but you need a a very thin screw driver and probably a lot of patience.

Good news is you can buy replacements...bad news is that they are friggin expensive!

Anyone rebuilt these things? Are they salvageable? The door lock lever on the mechanism is not fully going up, therefore not allowing the latch lever to do it's job.:search:

Luck is on my side today.

Removed it and it works fine....must be something in the install of the rods or door lock. Anyway...time to degrease and reinstall:bonkers:

IF the inner handle works decent but the outer does not.....

you need a 1/4 inch swivel on a short socket of X size and get in there to remove the outer door handle....there is a little rod going from the handle to the latch, it has one of them Jesus clips on it....you know the one, looks like a hairpin and you yelllllllll JEXZUS H CHRIST WHERE DID THAT CLIP GO!!!!,

so anyway you find a loose rivit with the handle lever on the bottom inside you can't see in position....stake that rivet very carefully so as not break that damn casting.....

nothing to reassemble, just a super duper PIA....like to have seen the chicks cussing on the St. Louis assy line, no way in hell they got a GUY to do that job....not for LONG anyway....:shocking::hissyfit::hissyfit:

Thanks Gene. Both work, but the latch was stuck. The upper lock lever was not allowing the lower lever to engage.

And yes, the Jesus clip fell into the door when I was removing it ,..telescoping magnets are inGENEious.:harhar:

They are all riveted together, impossible to take apart. Take it out, put it in a bath of cold degreaser and let it sit. Blow it off w/ pressurized ait and make sure it's completely clean. Then when it is, regrease it with some sprayable moly grease or some graphite based stuff. I have done this and it smoothens those mechanisms right up. The crap that gets in there over the years tends to lock them up.

I just bless hell out of my lock mechanism with carb cleaners, then hit the thing with WD40 and call it a day.....not any believer in any white lube of any type, that shit drys out and can stop a freeking freighter.....

I not sure what you mean by 'upper lock lever' as if that does not release the door, I found the loost riveted stud holding the lever on the handle itself as being the culprit....you can't see it unless the silly handle is outta the door....

it does not allow enough throw on the rod to release the lock latch/levers....

That's the lever that goes into the lock cylindar. That lever needs to be at full travel up(unlocked). If the outer door handle rod is not adjusted properly, it will not allow the lock lever to go to it's full travel up. If it is not full travel up, the the latch lever won't engage (open the latch) when you try to open the door.

I fiddled with it for a little while and got it adjusted perfectly....for now.

Well, man, best of luck with it....but I feel you need remove that handle and tighten that damn stud/rivet or you will be breaking some mounting part in there, and it's only pot metal....you can lengthen the actuator rod to mask the problem.....it's the way I remember mine, but I admit it's been some time....I know that outer handle is a PIA to remove....
but they are even more of a PIA to replace....not cheep....

Had similar problem with mine. Tore everything apart 3 times trying to fiqure out what was wrong. Major PIA

Glad you got it working!

"For now" lasted until yesterday.

Latch was sticking a little. When I pulled the inner door handle, the handle came right off along with the screw and the handle slide on track. The door handle is fine, but the control unit is trashed. :smash:
