Early/late C3 headlight bezel weights?

Yeh, the old assy's were heavy as shit, a real boat anchor....

the new ones I dunno about....:shocking::o

Just curious if anyone has access to the older potmetal bezels and the later fiberglass units, and can give us a comparative weight measurement?

thanks,
Mike

What are on your 69 ? I might have a couple 73s but I would guess they are fiberglass.

My plastic bezel weighs 452g. I don't have a metal bezel to weigh.

I need to find a decent (and decently priced) scale that will weigh accurately below ten pounds.

If you could post that weight in the Tech section, I'd appreciate it. I'll pull one of my bezels off soon and look around for some place to weigh it.

Thanks Larry!

I have a 72 and the whole assembly of one side, everything weight 13 pounds
Thats everything, bracket, high and low beams, springs, brackets.

Humm just reread it, the bezel is in a box, Ill try to get it out.

Mine are the potmetal units. I'm just curious how much extra weight I'm carrying around way up front. I don't have a decent scale that is accurate at small weights.

The bezels on my 68 and 70 are cast aluminum. They are extremely light. The bezel I'm talking about are the compound curve units that fit around the headlights. The close out the area under the relatively flat aluminum plate headlight "eyelids" and the car body when the headlights are in the up position.

Neither of these bezels were original equipment apparently. The bezels on the 68 have cutouts for the head lamp washer squirters (not a 68 option) and the ones on the 70 don't have these cutouts, even though I think the 70 came with the squirters. Bpth cars have been repaired before I bought them for front end collisions.

My metal bezel (with headlight squirters) weighs 590g, according to my HF scale. (That damn scale is handy!)
Prior to my move south, I had some fiberglass/plastic bezels. I've lost them somewhere during all the packing and unpacking, but it looks like it's a low priority project right now.

Thanks for the info, Larry!

When I pulled the bezel off the other night to weigh it, I noticed the quarter inch thick steel arm that limits the vertical travel of the headlight assembly. I was curious, so I pulled it off and weighed it. After looking at it, it looked like a lighter aluminum piece could do the same job. During breaks from welding on my lower radiator crossover replacement, I started to cut and bend some leftover scrap pieces. The replacement(s) look like they'll do the job. The before and after:

The absolute reduction isn't a lot (a little over a pound for the pair), but the relative amount was noticable when holding both of them.

As someone said before, watch the ounces, and the pounds will take care of themselves.
