Exhausting Question SBC + Headers HELP

Retired Again!
I may me a little slow on this. But I'm asking anyway.

I have a SBC. Ok, its now a 383, and I need to buy some headers - so now my confusion. Now, I can't exactly get to my garage from here - so I can't measure, etc - but I can ask my wife to do that if needed. What I'd like to do is to start ordering parts to ship in -- while I'm still shipped out over here in the sand-box. So, here are my questions regarding headers types/cylinder head configs.

There are a number of different head configurations and I get that they have to do with exhaust port shape and location and a number of other design features - and eBay has them all.

For the header mounting - it all starts at the head. I am confused on the various types of cylinder heads for a SBC. I did the GOOGLE+ Bing, and I'm still confused. If I could find a set of gasket diagrams and dimensions - I'd be able to better understand (anybody got some?) which headers might fit.

I see that some are nearly equally spaced, some (like mine) are center two tube closer together, some are 2 bolt mounts per port, others are three, etc,etc.

So, it looks like the R07 is not right. Right?

But what about SB2? Would SB2 headers fit the "nominal" exhaust port config? Ie, center 2 tubes close spaced. What about port shape? ANy difference in Round/square-ish?

What about SB2.2s?

SVO's what are those all about?

I've been looking at Stainless/Inconell and really would like to get it right - as it would be a bitch to get them rewelded and fitted that way (not to mention the expense of buying something that doesn't fit). Or would that be easier to get them fitted than I am imaging?

Any help you can offer will be greatly appreciated!

Less than 120 days to go!
Cheers - Jim

Jim, first off, come back safe and sound.....screw everything else,.....

as to the headers.....everyone got a opinion....but what I have is Schoenfeld #151 steel headers....paid maybe 150 bux...some years ago, been on there fine here in Orange Park, inland, Florida....on the L98 heads they don't even come loose for some strange reason...knock on wood....

I have had them on 993 iron heads, and also a set of Edelbrock aluminum heads which for some reason were the worst for loose bolts....go figger....I dunno why, just was....

now the only caution is....they can get close to the plug wires...that can force a conversion to Jacobs ceramic plug boots, which cured MY problem with the stock angle plug #113 L98 heads.....

:flash::yahoo:

R07 is a spread port exhaust header, latest nascar stuff.

SB2 & SB2.2 is a siamesed like stock but much larger ports, further apart and raised, won't bolt up. Bolt holes are in a different spot.

SVO = Ford.

You need regular headers, 1-3/4 primaries.

Did I miss the type/brand of heads you're running? Unless you have some peculiar head configuration, I would assume you'll need a pretty standard header which will be the kind that has the center cylinders siamesed. That's really a pretty standard header for a SBC. There was a two part manufacturer's review a few months back in "Vette" magazine that listed many different brands and gave specs. If you have access (I know it it's probably impossible unless you have a subscription), the issues are the July/August 2010 of Vette. If you don't I may be able to scan and e-mail you the articles.
I think you're biggest concern, if this is for a Vette, is going to be more an issue of ground clearance. Especially for the older Vettes, many of the SBC headers on the market are "they'll fit Corvettes too", which means that a lot of them hang down a good 2-3" lower than just about anything else under the car.

Hooker Headers

I've been running chassis headers (Hooker Super Comps, pn 2134 with 1 3/4" primary tubes) on my C3 and C2 vettes for several years. They fit both angle plug and straight plug heads and do not extend down too far alleviating ground clearance issues, however, when looking at Summit's prices, I see that they are over $600 now!

I looked at Shoenfeld's catalog and saw that their price was more reasonable, but there was no reference to fitting the C2 or C3 Corvette.

Mrvette - could you post some pictures of how they fit the Corvette chassis?
