Hey Guys,

I've got a fiberglass hood that blew over in the wind and has a half dozen big chips down to the primer.

Do I sand and feather these things out or fill them with surfacer and sand smooth? It's a racer so it gets a lot of abuse.

If I do a surfacer it's gonna be much softer than the paint so I wonder if I can sand the whole bit smooth?

I have a similar situation. I bought a hood that has been sitting outside forever. It has the chips you describe and some spider cracks.

So what material would I fill this with? The hood is SMC right?

If it's SMC evercoat and ecklers and others have specially formulated resisn to tackle the release agent issues.

If it's fiberglass you can grind or stop drill the cracks and use fiberglass resin (www.uscomposite.com) for example.... if it's SMC I'd use Evercoat SMC adhesive/filler.

Post pics of the damage

If it's not structural or not on a corner I would just fill it with SMC adhesive.

If it is, rip off any small loose piece of fiberglass, or set the big ones in the position you want them. Hit it with 80-120 grit, paint it with epoxy resin (unless its real fiberglass) and add 3 layers of mesh, overlapping the good surface (which should also be sanded. Sand to get your form, fill to get it perfect.

Spider cracks - grind them out, fill or reglass.
