Flaming River power rack and pinion 1963-82

I fished all over that site, and found NO pix of the input linkage....just the rack on the mounting.....

anyone got any ideas how many universals it took to get there??

other tech issues??

:confused2:

Looks identical to the older non power, the input is 10000000x better than the steeroids junk, all you have to do is drill a hole in the motor mount and it's pretty much a straight shot. Looks like it's the same width as the non power rack so the geometry isn't dead on w/ the susp. geometry

Winter 01-02 I pulled a '92 Grand Am rack from a junkyard, for 35 bux....mounts and all.....cut a crescent out of near the same spot the above drilled a hole through the mount, to clear the same input shaft/coupling...

I have only two universal joints, collapsed my column lower shaft snug on the firewall and got some junkyard universals to come apart easy, restaked in the configuration I need, and it's been there since about March of '02....

Coincidently I just saw a show on SpeedTV featuring this rack. While it's not 35$ I don't see the price as too bad if it's a true bolt in.

But, what are the advantages?

Or comparison to the Borgeson box (and all that is needed for an power steering car to Borgesson upgrade) which I can buy right now on Fleebay for $659.

From what I have read, the Borg box is the same overall ratio I have with the rack above,....but I have never driven a Borg conversion...so no comment, love to try it some day....swap rides for a while with someone for a few hours??

my conversion cost me about 200 bux or less, in total, the expensive being the conversion block for the OEM tie rod ends used on the rack interface...machinist costs 80 bux for the adapter....I used stock tie rod ends as I didn't want heim joints for street driving daily....extended the adjustment tube/sleeves....my setup has one glaring 'flaw' I left it that way and find on problem in driving it fast or slow, or around corners....that is the rack is offset one inch to the driver's side...and so the driver's tie rod is 19" overall length, and 21 for the pass side....

After looking at both units at SEMA I'm going with the Borgeson unit when funds permit. I'm just not sold on 3 u-joints converting my inputs ~90*. The Borgeson is a nice piece and I don't buy any of this nonsense that the rack is SOOOO much better than a fresh steering box.
