Well, as the pre-war hot-rodders always said, "8 for show, 4 for go!"
And as an aside, I actually did see in action down in south Texas in the 70's a flat 8 Ford air compressor. One bank powered it, the other side was an air compressor.

Believe it or not, I had a feed/ground? wire go bad on the batch fire on this vette, drove it home that way....
the driver's bank 1357 did not have any gas, to the batch fire of the injectors....been a while now....funny as hell the engine ran good as it did...
