When going over parts, I noticed that my flywheel is not flat. In the center it is fairly deeper than towards the edge. I never bothered checking it before.:(

So I need to go for another. Now, this is an 168 tooth flywheel for an internally balanced engine.
Seen the weight of these things and the associated cost in shipping towards me, I would consider looking for a used one.

Is there any obvious things to distinguish between externally balanced/153 tooth flywheels and the one I need ?

Thx

Which engine do you have and what year?

If I read your post correctly and assume that is pre-1986, you have a 168 tooth flywheel which is internally balanced. If you want a lighter flywheel, any internally (neutral) balanced BBC or SBC flywheel will work if it is the two piece rear main seal design.

If you go to a smaller flywheel such as a 153 toothed wheel, you will also need a different starter nose such as the in-line design which used two unequal length bolts, OR, a dual-drilled gear reduction starter.
