Not what i expected when i opened this up.

Just say no to dope. NOS shot would be more fun.

It's cool. I just didn't want to talk about it while I was doing it. I actually finished it a couple months ago, but then immediately had to have an unrelated surgery which had me out of commission for another couple months (I have a metal plate in my neck now).

The chemo was for hepatitis C. While not as heavy as cancer chemo, it was still pretty shitty for 6+ months. I'll give you all the spiel now.

Hep C is transferred strictly and only by direct blood-to-blood contact. Not sex, not contaminated food. ("Hepatitis" just means "liver disease", of any kind.) Hep C was unknown until the early '90s.
It lies dormant for 25 or 30 years, then 'activates' and attacks the liver.
It is fast becoming one of the pre-eminant health problems of the aging generation, and already is the number one reason for liver transplants.
I was lucky, the genotype I had has a 70% cure rate. The other types only have a 30-40% cure rate, although there is a new type of chemo that was just was released a few months ago and is still in the clinical testing stage in America.
Two other friends of my were diagnosed with it. One got cured by the chemo, the other...it didn't work, so he's going through it again with a more aggresive 'program'.
If you ever got a blood transfusion, gave blood, got a tattoo before the mid 90s, or ever at all partook from a coke straw passed around the table at a party (scratching the nasal lining), or anything else that may have gotten someone else's blood into you--even just a few bloodcells-- you should go ask for the specific test. The first test just tells you if you've been exposed. It does not mean it is active and you may be fine. But then you still will need the second test to find out if it is active.
Talk to your doctor about it next time, seriously.

John

I can really relate, happened in the close family.
You're courageous for getting thru this AND sharing it with us.
You got my respect, hat down :hi:
Get well soon.:rose:

I'm well from all that now, and I thank you all for your thoughts.
Now I just have the other usual devils to deal with once again, but I have been given a new perspective about them....

If you have no devils, you will have no angels either.

Not the least by any means, I f**ked up something when I did the motor on the car a few years ago. My very first SBC rebuild, I did it all myself and I am a bit proud of how well it ran. But something is wrong now, and I need to pull it and do it over. That's cool. I'm bummed of course, but it's cool.

Kill the Buddha. Amen.

OK so what's up with the motor? Noise, runs bad, what?

Smoking bad. Started a couple years ago, a little puff when I started it up. Then it progressed to puffing when it idled for very long. Then at stoplights. Then under acceleration. Now all the time like a bug fogger.
I did a leakdown & compression test, all good. Replaced valve guide seals. Tinkered with the PCV system. Replaced the intake gaskets. I'm beginning to think I have broken rings, despite the leakdown test results. Of course that was over a year ago when it wasn't so bad.
It's too embarassing to drive at all anymore, even at night.
This time around, I'll ask for some help from my hot rod buddies.

Hmm. Don't beat yourself up just yet. If it passed leak down, it just may be sucking in oil somewhere.

I guess that Sly's had better days.

I watched a report on Anderson Cooper'S show last week about Sly.
Prety sad.
couldnt find the report but this explains the situation.

I'm with Bird.. If it passed leakdown, the rings are, in my teeny mind, in good shape. I think I'd be looking at valve guides. It started puffing at startup- pretty classic valve guide seal symptom, and got worse from there. If the guides are sloppy, seals won't do a bit of good.

AFR heads...Known for retaining too much oil, although mine came just at the time they announced they had supposedly fixed the problem. I don't know if these are 'pre' or 'post' fix heads. I asked them at one time but got no reply.
I gave them to the machine shop brand spanking new when they did the motor work and they did a little bit of work on them to make sure they were right, including working the oil drains. These guys knew exactly what I was talking about & I trust them implicitly.
Yeah, it would be a lot easier to pull the heads first, and then I could inspect the cylinder walls as well.
But in a perverted way, I was kinda looking forward to having the engine out so it would be easier to replace the heater core and delete the AC box. Only been, what, 4, almost 5 years now without a cabin heater--or more importantly, a windshield defroster. Comes in handy in Colorado, dontcha know...

You know John, I find it almsot worth pulling them to do them on a stand anyhow. If you want to do some engine bay work as well, yank it. But do just pull the heads and look first.

Glad to hear you're better now. Interferon? BIL was on it for the same reason a few years ago. Sad he felt like death, which was convenient since he was only about 6mo from dying (diabetes and hep C).

As for the motor, sorry to hear about it. But it's always a good excuse to upgrade the cam and "while I'm at it...".
