In the process of frame swapping, I'm now reaching the fuel tank section.
My fuel tank is very clean, but the cover is rusted as hell, I guess it did its job at covering.I'm wondering what to do with it.

I realize I never saw pictures of this tank cover on restoration project, and I couldn't find place where it's sold.
Are they all ditching them?

Is this the piece of plastic (metal??) that fits between the tank straps and the tank itself? I think is supposed to be some sort of an impact protection device for the fuel tank.

They are still available from some of the Corvette vendors. I think Paragon.

I've never seen the fuel tank shrouds new for sale. Not to say they're not. All the one's I've delt with were rusted bad also. Sand blasting and some paint took care of that.

No, paragon don't sell them. It's a big metal piece that covers entirely the tank.
I guess I'll have to take picture of mine because I could not get a simple picture of it on the internet.

:bonkers: Pardon my complete flatfooted not knowing...but WTF am I looking at, re reading this I see it's some sort of cover, like top 1/2 of a tank to go over top of the real tank??

first I seen one....course my '72 had the tank replaced by p/o.....

but never spotted one on the other vettes I worked on....

:goodnight::mobeer:

You read me right, it cover the entire tank. Looks like this is a rare piece, at least it saved the tank for the rust disease that plagued the rest of the car.

Yes, it's a steel cover and only used till 77 I think it was.

is the crusty one yours? if yours is only rusty and not rotted, simply have it sandlasted and either paint or powdercoat.

This one was all rusty too:

Yeah, only rusty.
Allright, one must piece to grind.:smash:

'Till 77?"....ok, so does that include the mid years? 63+ and my year like say 68-72?

if so, I wonder what the theory was...to let gas drain under the car instead of splatter all over the joint??

brings the name 'Pinto' to mind....

just how large a hazard IS this in reality??

hell, any car get slammed by a Peterbuilt and it's toast....

but what IS the hazard??

:bonkers:

No, C2s never had it, chrome bumpers neither, I think it's 74-77

The tank is the last thing to worry about in a bad crash, you'd die from the lack of safety structure before that LOL these cars are death traps

But NO car on the road meets the Peterbuilt standard....

so on a scale of 1-10 ten being a battle tank....

where do C3's stack up in early years??

Check out Paragon part 11606. Its the 71-74 Fuel tank shield. It's in the part of the catalog where they sell fuel tank stuff. The catalog I'm looking at is their 2009 catalog. They also sell the tank straps and the tarpaper insulators that fit between the straps and the tank.

Search again for the part number and "tank shield", no luck.
For the tar paper, I used roofing felt just like the corvette-restoration guy did.
Thanks however for looking up.

Why can't you use some sort of fire retardant wrap. I have two 77s and the shield is a pia. It is heavy and makes tank removal more involved as you have to fish the gas, return and vapor line (along with sending unit wire) through it.

Spent the weekend cleaning/grinding/etching/painting the sucker.
:banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead:

So It's going back to the new frame.

I missed what year your car is, but if it has the vents on the rear deck, I would recommend putting the tank shield back on. This will prevent any water from getting to the tank top and sitting around the sending unit etc and creating any rust.
Also get some plastic washers to mount between the shield and the frame at all the bolt positions, so there is a space for water etc to drain, instead of being trapped between the frame and shield. Oem, they bolt tight to each other.
If you have an old tank bladder, it makes great isolation strips for the xbars and straps.

I had my shield out for a couple years and ended up blasting, painting and reinstalling it, for the water issues alone. It's easy to get caught in a thunderboomer here.

The vette is a '76, so no rear deck vents, still, when I see the state of the cover (rusty) and the state of my tank (almost pristine) I can tell the cover did its job, so It's going back into the car.
Very good tip about the washer, I would have probably missed this damn important details. Thanks

agree....

Mine does not have this cover and I've never heard of this cover's existence until this thread.... if your tank is in good shape then yes, it did its job....
