a variety of different sizes on ebay ranging from $175 to $300.

So i'm thinking of taking the muffler off and replacing it with one of these. I'd like to run a separate oil system say a gallon reservoir and an electric pump and cooler if necessary.

The spare tire and carrier is removed so there is a lot of room back there to do this.

Turbo lag much?? pretty much unstreetable....

much less they are typically water cooled these daze, but back there, maybe not such a issue....I dunno what temps would be....do need oiling though, but lots of circulation so engine pressures/volumes.....

:crap:

I dunno Jim. Have you checked to see if they are available in rust? :phone:

I'm not so sure about that. I've been doing some searching around and find that they do work. I think you have to lower your expectations. It's not going to be what a conventional system is with the very hot temps and high pulse velocity of a turbo connected close to the head.

However, if you can live with lag and poor lower rpm response it still has the capability to deliver as much boost as an unmodified engine can stand.

I know Marck has a real pet peeve with the rear turbo philosophy so i'm sure he'll lay it out for us.

I can play around and put together something for around $500 that i can remove in 30 min to take the car back to stock for my roadcourse work if they want to bitch about it.

My exhaust sytstem right now is a 2 to 1 with single muffler on the right side of the back so i think that's perfect to give this a try with a single turbo, I can get stainless flex for the cold side from J.C. Whitney which would be super easy to route.

I need some recommendations on turbo size, cold pipe diameter, and whether you can blow into a stock QJ. I guess i could build a tin box around the whole thing if blow thro won't work. I'm thinking a smaller turbo to minimize turbo lag and help build boost sooner.

P.S. Bird, I tried calling you the other day. I don't know if you realize your wife disabled your voicemail so she can bust your balls full time on remodeling that house. Just saying......

Because, we don't have voice mail. We have an answering machine.

Problem is, the turbos are not the only thing you need, there's a wastegate w/ plumbing for control, some kind of boost retard, carb referencing, no intercooler for you right? The oil system, a shur flow bilge pump does not a reliable oil pump make. single stage dry sump section would be the best choice

My only turbo car was bought in ~'89 and sold in ~91, it was a FUN little POS, '84 Dodge Colt...last of the small versions, with the 1600 turbo and twin stick tranny....

that skunk could haul ass pretty good with the waste gate all adjusted up....

I put in a water cooled later version of the turbo itself....

that's back when my skeleton would fold into the SOB.....

These turbos come with integral wastegate for that price. I doubt if a BOV is even needed so no referencing/extra plumbing is needed.. My Grand National didn't have a blow off valve. I'm also going to disagree with you on the oil pump. The volume to service that little tiny bearing is miniscule.

Boost retard would be a pita. I say use E85 and don't worry about it.

I thought about this way back in the 80's and was told it wouldn't work, then Squires came out with his system and has made $$$ off the idea. So I think you're right about the smaller turbo to minimize lag, but I think you'll need a BOV if you have a turbo suitably small enough to reduce lag. Then, you run into the whole host of issues with blow through carburation. I think the time and expense getting a blow through system to work right would be more than a swap to a simple TBI system.

Although I'm an EE, when it comes to the vette i don't want to mess with any electronics. There is something to be said for simplicity. Don't tell my customers that.

I could also buy a blow thru carb for less than a FI system. I'll increase the fuel pressure to 5 psi above max boost and start with that.

Be sure to do it at night, tell me which direction to look, and take a video....

Adam. Einkenvette,(sp.), bought a used Procomp blower from ebay. Jambed a hat on the carb, rejetted it, and gets over 600+ HP out of that stock motor. Runs pretty damn good too.
