When I went to Ireland a few weeks ago for my mate's funeral, I borrowed a GPS to take with me. I've never used one before and was sceptical about how good they are.

I was impressed and now want to get my own but there's loads to choose from. I've been told that Garmin are the better one to get if I plan to use it in the Middle East (which I would) but there's dozens of Garmins alone to choose from.

Any of you guys using a GPS? What're your thoughts and opinions?

Garmin I have is called a NUVI 200w I paid like 120 bux out of the local West Marine store here......

and it's deadly accurate....I hit the mute button, can't stand some irritating bitch talking to me telling me I dunno my own neighborhood, or something.....

amazing tech these daze.....course I have NO clue as to how it would work there, or anywhere off the NA continent.....maps and shit??

:amazed::huh:

I've got an older Garmin unit (Street Pilot). I've been very happy with it. Works MUCH better than my father in law's Tom Tom. That one seems to go insane from time to time.

One down side with Garmins (mine at least) is that you have to pay a fair bit for updates. If you live in an area with lots of construction, it will get upset in these areas without the updates.

I had a Magellan in the UK. Worked Ok but was about 30 seconds late on the turns, screen updates were a little slow. I have a Tom-Tom, and the human interface is clunky and slow. I've also got a Garmin I use when I'm flying- that one is right there, easy to use and see. If I get another one for the car, it'll be Garmin.

I have a Garmin "Street Pilot" and don't use it any longer. It's time for the new street update to be installed. I have OnStar with turn-by-turn directions, I pretty much don't need a GPS now. I have a GPS in my pocket too, Blackberry Storm. Would it be cost effective to give me a small amount of money for it and pay to ship (mail?) it over there?

Don't trust my Garmin further than I can throw it!! She does know how to get me "home" though. Mines up to date with 2009 maps, still misses roads and neighborhoods that have been there for years and as previously stated have to pay for updates. Comparded to GM's Nav Radio, like the ability for another person to input values while vehicle in motion. Is a provision on their website to submit updates, but as many issues that I've found I'd be there forever. Easy to drive past points relying heavily on her. Newer models with the "T" may be better by indicating which "T"urn lane to be in on the approaching intersection. I personally would like one that is more accurate,

Check Sams Club for a almost decent price,

Don't get lost in trying to make up your mind!

Got the TomTom XL touchscreen for my son a while back. I've used it and it is accurate. It also has online updates, but I don't know what you have to pay. It was cheaper than the equivalent Garmin when I got it.

I can only compare it to fixed GPS unit in my other cars. It is much better than the old CD based system/ The DVD based system is better from a screen appearance point of view, but is more complicated. I think the TomTom is better than them both and easy to use.

I have the Garmin Nuvi 660 and love it. I use it every time I go to the US and its never ever led me wrong. They do want you to pay for maps but there is ways round that. Ive never paid for any of the updates I have and always have the latest :)

I just saw the price to download other maps :amazed:

What's the way around paying for extra maps?
