OK, this is way off topic but I know some of you live out in the country and have this problem.

I have a gravel driveway at my house. I have been using Roundup to control the mutant weeds that grow in the gravel for years. Well these weeds have become Roundup resistant and treatment only makes them kinda brown for a few days and then they come back stronger than ever!

Is there something out there that works better?

(Please don't say gasoline )

Yes there is,but without a license you will not be able to purchase any of it. Once a plant becomes resistant to Glysophate the main ingredient in round up you are pretty much screwed.
But there is hope :bounce:. Salt water, will sterilize the soil and nothing will grow there for quite some time, buy lots of rock salt spread it over the gravel and water it in.

If you did not live so far away i have chemicals i use on my farm that will take care of it.

Next time alternate between 2-4-D Amine and round up and you will not have the same problem.

Will the salt work on bamboo?

Corvette buddy here has some 'African bamboo' we dug up off his fence with the neighbor....trying to grow it in a pot....when/if it takes off, I want to have the entire back yard planted in it.......wife not so sure....

nice looking plant....

as for killing weeds.....I was going to say gasoline with old engine oil....

OH, to kill a weed/bush....depending on size...soak in a quart of gasoline for a few minits....set fire, let it cook the root ball get that temp up to some 150f+ and it's dead....next year, comes out with a pull....:bump:

I have no idea, all you can do is try it. If it uses fresh water to grow in,then yes it will, but i have not grown any bamboo. Not much call for it here in the mid-west.
But if you want to piss of you're neighbor poor some rock salt in their yard or garden :goodevil:

You used to be able to buy a product known as a soil sterilizer. Basically killed anything that was growing and effectively killed the soil. May not be available anymore but it wouldn't hurt to ask around.

A friend of mine bought a torch for his propane bottle and just smokes 'em.

Do not use fuels to kill unwanted weeds, grasses, bush's,or trees or any other chemical that is not manufactured for that process. At least not around me,i will turn you're ASS in.

The Brush Burner can still be purchased at farm and home stores, the only problem is,the plants will grow back.

There use to be more chemicals available to the general public, but they were not used properly and people ignored the directions so they were taken off the shelf, now you have to have a license to get them.

Truth be known, my folks had a 'bluestone' driveway....stones about the size of a egg or maybe 1/2 that .....and it was a huge PIA with especially the winter snow....plow scattered that crap all over the lawn....dad finally had it paved....made a great base for the pavement....

Want some Korean Lespadeza seed, that will drive them nuts for several years. A very invasive plant.

Kevin, What is 2-4-D Amine? What kind of license do you need to get the good stuff?

I remember when I was a kid, my dad spilled some lime in the yard. Nothing grew in that spot for years. Don't know if you can even get that anymore.

What is Spectracide? Guy at the garden center says it kills eveything.

this stuff is a concentrate and comes in a grey/silver 1 qt plastic bottle with a black label... think it's called "season long" or something like that... HomeDepot/Lowes sell it, it kills everything....
Here's the trick: the 1qt is good for 5 gallons ... just use 1 gallon water and pour half the bottle in there.... it's pretty good stuff once you have the mixture adjusted correctly....LOL

found it, $20 for 40oz at the HomeDepot:

$15 for the qt.....

Our back yard, on a hillside, is of course nothing but Florida sand, and so wife covered the upper end with black plastic, then mulch...but over years the weeds have yet again taken over....how much area does this cover and how long does it kill weeds for?? we have some industrial strength wild flowers in back that will strangle small animals, including cats and dawgs, i'ts so agressive....blue flowers, tough as nails....I sorta like them, but wife...well...what can I do???

2-4-D Amine is a salt based selective herbicide,it will kill broad leaf plants, the salt is a binder that helps it stick to the plant.
In order to get the good stuff you will need a commercial applicators license, i got mine while in college through my Chemicals class.
Spectracide is a Glysophate based herbicide, same thing as round up.
Lime you can still get,it is used to balance the Ph level in the soil, to much will knock the soil out of balance, some plants like a high Ph level or acidic, and some like the Ph low or sweetened. You would have to apply a lot and it is not cheap.
To much nitrogen will burn the plants and kill them also, but again it is not cheap and you would have to apply so much that it becomes a pollution hazard.
If you can get you're hands on some Tordon or Crossbow it will take care of the problem, apply with care because every thing down stream will die too from run off,and wear a respirator mask and good heavy rubber gloves, this stuff is bad for you're health

You can mix some 2-4-D and some 2-7-D together and kill everything in the neighborhood, but finding 2-7-D will be next to impossible.
These are the 2 main ingredients in Agent Orange :amazed: 2-7-D was discontinued years ago after the Times Beach accident.

try and get some limestone rubble, or road base.... mix that in with the stones, wet it and roll it....driving on will do the same thing.... goes as hard as rock..that should stop the weeds from popping up.

2-4 D is actually a plant growth regulator.

Kevin, you should have known that :harhar:

You might try waiting until after the next good rainstorm and then using a dose of Roundup again. It'll likely work better when the weeds are growing. No question though that eventually they'll develop some resistance and you may already be there.
