I am going to be taking my half shafts off and replacing the u-joints, while they are off I would like to paint them. Can anyone tell me what the factory color was on the half shafts, black, silver, gray ???

Doesn't it depend on the year? Pretty sure my '81 had black painted/coated shafts. One of mine is still original and black with no discernible rust.

Mine is a 1971 and the half shafts are rusty w/ no signs of paint. Thanks for your help guys, going to paint them some color, don't like the rust look.

If you want the stock look without the inconvenience, then clean them and put clear POR15.

They sell "cast iron grey" at Auto Zone, I think it's "engine enamel".... $6 a can and it it looks pretty good. I've used it on brake calippers and this stuff is pretty good, it resists brake pad dust, temperature and wheel cleaner.....

I have the cast iron paint from Eastwood also.

For painting suspension parts, etc. I prefer grey. If you go to a machinery museum, steam engines, electric generators, etc, a common color is grey.

Currently I'm using Krylon New Ford Grey paint. I also have bought a similar grey powerder paint grey from Eastwood.

Engine, bellhousing, Chevy orange. Rear suspension grey, trailing arms black. I also painted the yellow Bilstein shocks on my 68 grey. The West Coast Choppers guy, Jesse James, says you shouldn't be driving anything yellow. Anyhow, Jesse notwithstanding, I would have still painted them grey.
