Between my header and my exhaust line, I have the typical three holes flange connection.
There should go a collection of gasket : one made of wire mesh, one made of regular gasket material, and thin steel flanged piece.
In what order should I put those three?

Maybe pics would help :

The collector :

The gasket parts

From the marks it bears, the metal part (bottom in the pic), which is actually copper definitely goes against the header side.

But then I can have either :

1) header -> copper gasket -> mesh -> gray gasket -> exhaust line
where the mesh would act as a heat barrier between the header and the gasket.

or

2) header -> copper gasket -> gray gasket -> mesh -> exhaust line
The wire mesh acting as a reinforcement and protection again the exhaust line side of the assembly.

EDIT: looked at the pic again and got it. It's scenario 2. CASE CLOSED

buy new ones... I just pulled my headers off my Corvette to put on sidepipes, I got stopped because I need to buy more of the header gaskets - they never leaked - they're an aluminum(ish) stuff - I'll get the name tomorrow. That, looks like a guaranteed leak - it also looks like it used to be one part and cooked itself apart over the ages (now you'll tell me it's new... still, looks pretty bad).
I've also used the straight copper gaskets with good results (so just use the copper and forget the rest

And no money in the pocket :amused:

These work awesome

granted they are expensive, but they don't need retorquing (check anyway), and they don't leak....
So the deal with solid gasket is to have them in a soft metal ("soft" alu, copper?) to they deform to the desired shape. Right?
