Headers and Heat

I don't have any definitive measurements, only anecdotal.

I did perceive a reduction in underhood temp when I had my headers Jet-Hotted. Perhaps simply because I expected it? I do believe there's a benefit even if it's simply protecting my expensive racing manifolds.

Which leads to the second point, EVERY time header wrap gets mentioned on any forum the immediate response is "don't do it". (See, even here) The story is that the wrap deteriorates the headers faster. Not to mention looks ugly and in your environment will hold moisture.

I like my ceramic coating and went on to do it to the side draft Weber manifolds the inline six racer sports...

I wrapped mine and saw a great decrease in underhood & cockpit heat. I do not think it looks ugly, and as far as deteriorating the headers--christ, how much do they cost? Seems to me headers are one of the more expendable items on a car....Mine have been wrapped for several years now and I see (or feel) no deterioration whatsoever.

Wrapped & sprayed with liberal amounts of silicone spray so the wrapping won't turn into a wick in case of an oil leak

Quite true, the V8 headers are almost expendable. I lose sight of that. My race headers are over $1000 when I start getting into what really works.

I tend to lose sight of the real world immersed in my racing program. I'd still rather have ceramic though, the wrap is ugly to MY esthetics...:stirpot:

GT6Steve, nice setup! Love those Webers.

When Jet Hot did my manifolds, they asked me if I wanted the inside done. Can't remember the exact conversation, but I believe they said that coating the inside is more effective than the outside. Actually that seems to make sense.

I used to wipe motor oil on the inside of steel headers. The theory is that it burns and leaves a carbon film on the inside which serves as a heat barrier.
