Hmmmmmmmmmmm

i think i'm with GENE on this one. i wish him the best of luck, but i think pontiac would have been a better selection. my $.02

michel, you might be right. don't know what the status of pontiac is. even if you could just buy the name, wouldn't that be cool?
"ya, i own pontiac".
"you own a pontiac?"
"no, i own pontiac!"

Penske has never made a bad business decision. He is smart and calculating...he has a plan. Probably to import cars in any segment currently popular, and market them under the Saturn name. He is also going to contract with GM to produce 2 models including the Aura.

He's already the second largest retailer of cars in America, and has experience from Toyota to Aston Martin. He'll embarrass GM, who never knew what to do with Saturn.

I'm with catbert on this one. I've also been a fan and Saturn owner since 93.

It was never really about the cars. They have always had some interesting value twists like plastic body panels or traction control if you forked out for auto and antilock brakes, but he real value was always reliability and customer service. Frankly, neither attribute fit into the GM mantra.

I got a letter from Saturn management earlier this year and they talked about sourcing their cars from where ever they felt they could get the best value. I'm not aware of any car label where they are currently totally outsourcing production, but this model is used extensively and successfully in many other industries.

I wish them well and hope they make it. I'm not totally enthused about the possibility of buying a Saturn made by Toyota or Hyundai, but to be fair, it may well be a better car.

Rumor is the "new" Saturns will be Korean Samsung's.

Strikes me as strange that GM wants to unload Saturn when that is their best CAFE standards brand. In order to meet Obama's new fuel standards, they are going to have to start making Saturn style cars all over again. Great business plan :bonkers:

Pontiac is not for sale, it's dead.

SOme years ago, Detroit Diesel (GM) was falling on it's azz. Trying to compete with CAT and CUMMINS, plus Mercedes and MAN (all 4 strokes) with a 2 stroke was not making it. It was so bad you needed to have someone really piss you off before you got in to drive one. Penske bought Detroit from GM, turned it around, introduced a full electronic controlled 4 stroke that didn't leak oil everywhere and got competitive. The 60 Series was a nearly instant hit. Good manners, pull like a draft horse, and good fuel mileage. Then they (DDC) developed the 50 Series 4 cylinder, setup a propane conversion for that diesel, and off to the races again.
FWIW: Allison Transmission is part of Detroit Diesel Corp.
My thought is that if Penske bought, or is buying Saturn from GM, he HAS a plan.
