Pretty sure it's the same deal as the coil in cap unit, but has an external coil, I know I have worked on one once, but can't remember the type of car, damnit...:hissyfit:

F-body 88-92 TPI & TBI as well as a few other GM vehicles used it as well. But seeing as it is on a TPI engine it's a F-body distributor.

This is the motor it came on, but the builder says its an HEI dizzy???I am sure its quite ok but my understanding of a HEI is a dizzy with the coil in the cap like my Corvette.

Perfectly fine, desirable in many respects because the cap is smaller having a divorced coil, so better firewall clearances on many installs, allowing you to remove the dizzy with engine IN the car even....your cool....no sweat man...

small cap dizzy is still HEI. The reason it was never put on the vette is because the vette switched to an external feed EGR and it's feed pipe is right where the coil would be. Touch a wire on a large cap then a wire on a small call. You will see the both delivery the same excruciating pain.

You can see the EGR pipe going over the back of the valve cover. But that is why this dizzy never made it on a vette.

Yup,all C4 corvettes retained the large in cap HEI and all F bodies got the external cap HEI.
