Just sitting here at 12:30 a.m. on the night shift and was wondering what everybody's opinions are on the different intakes (non-vortec)?

This may be a broad question but hypothetically if I were to replace the heads, cam, and intake on the L-48, what would your suggestions be?

Most threads you read people compare the Performer to the stock L-48 intake just lighter and 'slightly' better flowing.

The RPMs, Airgaps, Strikeforce, and etc. all show an improvement but need higher RPMs to benefit. Hood clearance is also an issue.

People seem to look favorably on the the stock L-82 intake. Flows better than the L-48. Fits under the hood. But is there a better choice out there?

If ya need more engine mod info, hypothetically: Dart iron eagle 180s, xe262cam, dizzy curved/set at 36 deg., and Lars tuned Quad. Car will driven spiritedly on the street and NOT raced regularly.

Is there a better/best intake out there for a 2-bolt L-48 that offers decent HP and TQ gains but won't kill the engine with RPMs?

man.... 5 1/2 more hours to go.......:banghead:

Thanks for looking!

IMO, do a DPFI setup, just better running all around, the old TPI mechanicals are cheep now, and the electronics is pretty well sorted out, calpak chips are only about 150 bux, you will get nearly double the fuel economy and much better running....

I'm gathering parts for a top end rebuild of a stock L-48.
Since the cam is going bad I figured to change a couple of things while we're at it. The work needs to be done by a shop since I have nothing but basic tools, only a carport and it's my daily driver so I can't afford it to be out for 3 weeks.
It has to be an pretty extreme low buck rebuild since I got a house to paint and all sorts of other stuff.

Everybody told me NOT to get one:

  • Offenhauser Dual Port Aluminum intake $80 (ebay)
  • Heddman Headers $80 (graigslist)
  • Trush Turbo glass pack mufflers (already on the car)

Still need:
  • Heads.
  • Q-jet rebuild by Cliff's
  • Schneider cam or Lunati Voodoo
  • Cloyes roller timing chain
  • New dizzy

Can't wait to get started...:yahoo:

The Chevy L-82 aluminum intake is a good flowing intake for a near-stock application. The Edelbrock 2101 is based on that Chevy aluminum manifold with some improvements, and is an excellent choice for a nice-running, high performance stock engine running under 5500 rpm. The manifold fits under the hood, accepts the Q-Jet without an adapter, and all stock accessories and components bolt right up.

I have a Weiand on mine, it's about 3/4" higher but with a 3" drop base air cleaner it fits fine. It has the EGR passage, which I blocked off, and also has the divorced choke pad, which I used for my Q-jet. Only problems were I had to cut my stock steel fuel line and add a bit of hose because carb was higher & fab a new choke rod.
My engine is similar to yours (see my profile), & I'm pleased with it.

(I don't have the car to check, but it seems to me mine is a #8004, but all I see on the Weiand site now is #8000--perhaps they dicontinued the 8004 or maybe I'm mistaken, but the 8000 looks to be about the same as mine)

Thanks for the good info guys! Guess that kinda clears things up. Now all I gotta do is find some flow numbers on the new Edelbrock E-Street heads that just came out and I can finalize what I want to do.

Thanks again!
