"It is the soldier, not the reporter, Who has given us freedom of the press.

It is the soldier, not the poet, Who has given us freedom of speech.

It is the soldier, not the organizer, Who has given us the freedom to demonstrate.

It is the soldier, Who salutes the flag, Who serves beneath the flag, And whose coffin is draped by the flag, Who allows the protestor to burn the flag"

Dennis Edward O'Brian

Wednesday, November 11 will be the annual observation of Veterans day.
A very fitting tribute to those who have served honorably and put their life on the line to stand between evil and the innocent. This Wednesday, fly your flag, give every vet you see a wave or hug and tell the vets "thank you" and the active servicemembers "stay safe".
And just as a related aside, tomorrow, November 10 marks the 234 birthday of the United States Marine Corps. If you know a Marine, wish him or her a "happy birthday". :flag: <--we have no flag smilie.:huh2:

I like the way that you stated "served Honorably". Well said. I think that is the key. Those of you (us) that made it a full career to retirement are a very small percentage of the American public, don't hold me to it, but I think it's really low, like 2-3%. I didn't realize that until someone else pointed that out to me.

(where's the flag icon?)

BBT, I didn't retire. I did my five years, got a couple stripes, couple ribbons, but ultimately I opted out. Kind of wish I hadn't. I'd be coming up on 20 next year if I had stuck with it. But looking back it was a smart move. I got out during douchebag Klinton's admin and avoided some really nasty shit in the sand box. Not a believer, but maybe there's someone looking over me afterall.

Boy I am now confused with my history.I thought it was Bush and son that brought fun in the sandbox. Clinton brought us new ways to use cigars.

Operation Desert Fox and others. Bush 1 didn't finish the damn job, Klinton didn't want to touch it, but he got plenty of people killed in Somalia. Bush 2 at least finished the job, even if he was half assed in getting it wrapped up. Make no mistake, I'm no fan of either of the Bush presidents. But I really dislike the first comrade in chief.

Who cares if you didn't stay long enough to retire. YOU SERVED, and that's something that alot can't say. My wife says that she's not a "real" veteran because she didn't retire like I did. I had to explain to her what a veteran is. I don't know if we should have a mandatory term for all Americans to serve in the military, but with the kids these days, I'd say, hell yea. Teach'em some respect, overall respect that is.
I really appreciate this country after living in other countries. I love this country. I think that every American needs to experience what military folks do. It can wake you up to alot of things that would otherwise go unnoticed.

I've never served in the military (I turned 18 the year they abolished the draft, 1971) but I have the utmost respect for all who have. No matter how long or at what capacity. They've kept this country what it is. I've traveled extensively for my work. (Middle East, Angola, Siberia, China, Venezuela and Columbia to name just a few) and I can guarantee there's no place like the USA!!! When I hear someone saying something negative about this place the first thing I think is---you've never been abroad, have you?

Got that right, AJ, I don't have to go see the rest of the world, just look at the pix from what ever source, and now of course the net says much more than any news ever did from decades ago...all it does is reenforce my already firm opinions......

:drink:

and YES it IS the Military that keeps our asses outta the soup, long as we LET THEM do the job.....them jerks in DC well, that's another story....:shocking::beer:
