I need redo the 18 y/o urethane LCA bushings on the '72, I wondering how to go about it, just as soon use rubber, but wonder if maybe new urethane would be easier.....and I don't want to battle the entire damn suspension.....

SO, to get the car up on stands in front , chain the jack to the cross support, jack under the spring pocket to compress spring, pop the 3 bolts off the cross shaft, and hammer away the shaft end bolts,

DOable?? or anyone try it this way, or is there something rong in my approach?? another thing is my hating to lose the damn rubber balljoint boots with my pickle fork hammering....

:sos:

replace the ball joint covers with poly

use a flame wrench to remove the rubber (preferably outdoors, and upwind of a hated neighbor).... it drops right out :2nd:

to my surprise Ecklers poly control arm bushings have the correct serrations at the end of the sleeve.... don't buy the cheap crap .....

I would not want to do this under the car, IMO it's easier to take the arms off.... the ball joits are only $30 at the Zone, even their "better" joints... why not do it once and be good for another 18 years ??

and you don't have to use the fork. support the spindle, turn the castle nut upside down and hit it with a hammer. I was lucky a few times and loosened the ball joint without destroying the boot.

I'm not a fan of hitting the castle nut - so easy to screw up the threads.... the alternative to pickle fork can be use two two or five pound hammers.... hold one against the side if the spindle, hit the opposite side with the other hammer.... it should deform the cast iron just enough to pop them apart. That said, it's worked twice out of ten times for me..... oh yeah, don't forget to leave the castle nut on, but loose, when you do that hit trick :)

The double sided smack SBG mentioned works for all kinds of stuck fasteners.
I used a 1 1/8" (I believe) hole saw without the pilot bit to remove the bushings.
And as squeaky as the poly bushings are in my sway bar, I sure wouldn't want them in my A-arms.

 Ahhhhgh....good point, I had used some special grease in a yellow plastic container for them.....I gotta search that shit out, got so much in that cabinet, jeez near 20 years ago....what are the odds???:shocking:
