Just curious if putting in a baffle tray is worth it. There's threaded posts in the valley to bolt one in, but I've never used one before. Any major up sides to spending the money and putting one in?

thanks,
Mike

Valley tray? My Cadillac 472 had one, supposedly to keep the (stock) intake clear of hot oil. I have no idea if it's even worth it.
So many things supposedly do something and if you leave 'em out you can't tell the difference.

I don't remember the 572/500 caddy engine that well, but off the olde tyme Pontiac engines I know that separate lifter valley pan was a nice item, as any intake leaks were super easy to trouble shoot, if you had a leak from the bottom of the induction passages a simple stethoscope would find them, if you had a water leak it went over top, and not into the sump....

and then there was that FAR superior position of the PCV valve that never sucked in any oil I ever noticed...proper baffling like the the LT1 engine from the early 90's had as a equivalent on that score anyway....

Good operational and diagnostic advantages to that design....

:trumpet::wink:

Based on my understanding of it's function, the next engine I build I will just coat the bottom of the intake. I'm already using the enamel coating in the rest of the block, why not use it there too?

I was thinking of a SBC tray and a spyder looking intake mani...similar to the old Poncho design....thing is, there is nothing I ever spotted that does DPFI....

but I did note the LT1 inducation looked a bit better than the L98 setup on that respect....

:twitch::confused2:

I have the lifter valley tray= it's the one that's tight enough to the lifters so in the event of a pushrod failure the lifter won't pop out of it's bore and drop oil pressure. GM part too. Added benefit of keeping hot oil off the bottom of the intake.
