LSx head design, is this really the secret?

Are LSx heads really the "secret" to the LSx engine? I have seen information that would indicate that the design of these makes more power without sacrificing low driveability. I can believe it, LSx cars I have driven seem to pull nicely and rev nicely.

So whats up? Why do they work so well? And why isn't the aftermarket copying them for 1st gen SBC? I know manufactures would have to provide new intakes to accommodate the even port spacing but that certainly shouldn't be a show stopper.

High port, better valve angle..yes, they are a big part of the secret. The 6 bolt main block is not bad either.

Actually dart has an SBC block where you can bolt on LS style heads, came out recently.

The heads are the bulk of the gain for sure. As TT pointed out better valve angles, port height, pushrod location and head bolts moved around to keep them out of the port. The EFI intake is the key to making the street manners - the great size and length give it a very wide performance range.

The engine itself has some clever features to save HP. The rings are thinner reducing friction, windage is much, much better because the cam tunnel is closed and does not drain on to the crank, pan design for better oil control, better seals with less drag on both ends of the crank. The stable cylinder walls stay round and reduce leakage so output stays up too.

I'm looking foreword to getting my 6.0L [with a lightweight flywheel] up and running for the spring.
